Town Closing In On Lukic

Town are closing in on the signing of Fulham midfielder Sasa Lukic.

The clubs are nearing an agreement for the 29-year-old Serbian international with, as per Ben Jacobs, a medical pencilled in for tomorrow if all progresses as expected.

Lukic has been with the Cottagers since January 2023 and since then has made 74 starts and 32 sub appearances, scoring three times.

The midfielder, who has a year left on his contract but with Fulham having an option for a further season, started his career with Partizan Belgrade, spending time at Teleoptik on loan before, in 2016, joining Torino where, aside from a season on loan at Levante in Spain, he spent almost seven years.

Born in Sabac, Lukic has won 62 Serbia caps, scoring two goals, and played all their games at both the 2022 World Cup finals and Euro 2024.

Lukic, who would be the first ever Serbian to represent the Blues, adds to Town’s depleted central midfield options and would be the second player recruited from Fulham this summer following defender Issa Diop, and the eighth new addition in total.

Monkey_Blue added 19:48 - Aug 6 He’s a suspension machine. Good player but questionable temperament. No problem if he’s back up like he was for Fulham recently, but he collects yellow cards at a rapid rate so he needs to be reigned in if we see him as a starter.

Well, it's looking like becoming CDM central here now. And yes Monkey Blue, he picks up more cards than a kleptomaniac in Clintons :). 9 in 19 games for Fulham last season, but somehow frequently avoids the red variety.

I'm far more concerned with getting at least one CM ( better two ) in who can progress the ball and pass. Interesting to see one of our earlier rumoured targets, Nelson Deossa, scored a 25 yard cracker and assisted another as Real Betis won 3-1 at Arsenal last night. Only thing there being, he's really a CDM too!

As for Ueda, it appears Brighton have made a " concrete offer ", and of course, like us, they would already have a Japanese player there to keep him company. As far as I'm concerned a no 1 striker is no longer needed ASAP but STP! All will no doubt be revealed.

number8 added 20:38 - Aug 6 Good signing. It also makes perfect sense to have 3 defensive centre mids if against the better teams you adapt and employ a double pivot. No good having two and then one gets injured/suspended when Arsenal are the next opponents.

Think him and Diop are two signings that stand out so far, with the others being squad type upgrades on what we had already.

Encisco would be the third signing at the level we need, and I think to have a sniff we need two more at this level

Seeing rumours that Brighton our interested in Ueda as well. That's annoying (but to be expected with his goal tally last season)

One thing about SL assuming it happens. He's definitely more forward thinking than our other CDM's as his stats from the last 365days show. He created more chances than 71% of other players in his position in similar quality leagues. If my memory isn't playing tricks I seem to remember him going forward from that position for Fulham a reasonable amount, when I've seen him play. So if he can somehow avoid suspensions, could be very useful indeed, as his " defensive contributions " are top draw. We wait and see.

Blues1 Morsy played alongside Massimo… Lukic and Matusiwa could both be on a yellow in the first 15mins. Are you ignorant enough to think also that being on a yellow in centre mid doesn’t mean a players game won’t then be affected. I know Azor managed to escape the second suspension… but we were all amazed that happened. In his last two seasons with Fulham despite starting around 50% of prem games Lukic has served three bans for yellows. Morsy and Azor couldn’t have started together. I don’t dislike the signing but he won’t play 30plusngames in the league.

It looks increasingly likely that we will be playing two defensive midfielder's with the attacking threat coming down the flanks. To reiterate that's five at the back two in midfield a winger number ten and a loan striker that's very similar to last season but with far better players. Correct me if im wrong but i cannot remember us being linked with attacking midfield players like quality strikers they come at a very expensive premium.
