O'Neil: We'd Expect Quite a Few More Arrivals
Saturday, 8th Aug 2026 18:10 by Kallum Brisset

Town boss Gary O’Neil says there is more work to do in the transfer market after the arrivals of midfield duo Florentino Luís and Saša Lukić this week.

Saturday’s signing of combative midfielder Lukić from Premier League rivals Fulham was the Blues’ eighth new addition of the summer and took the club beyond the £100 million mark in terms of total spend since promotion back to the top flight was confirmed in May.

Six of O’Neil’s new recruits started Town’s final home pre-season friendly against Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, during which record signing Emersonn was on the scoresheet.

Despite the busy activity so far, the Blues boss insists that more additions are needed ahead of the Premier League opener against Sunderland in two weeks’ time.

“The plan is to do quite a bit more,” he said. “Numbers really, of course, nothing is set in stone, but we’re still trying to do stuff. You hope that before Sunderland we’d have done some, and then definitely before the close of the window we’d expect there to be more arrivals.

“Everyone’s working hard trying to find the right balance between what’s done really well here in the past and what needs to be added, and trying to puzzle that all together to give ourselves the best chance this season in the best league in the world which everyone’s looking forward to.

“It’s a long season and you need enough bodies around, experience and pace. You need enough quality, it tests all of it. We’re going to need as much as we can, and as you’ve seen so far the ownership and Mark are fully committed to giving us the best chance possible.

“All working hard to try and put the club in the best place we can by the end of the window, and see if we can start the season well.”

Midfield had been a particular focus after it was revealed Azor Matusiwa and Jack Taylor are both racing to be fit in time for the start of the campaign, leaving just Marcelino Núñez and Cameron Humphreys as senior options during previous friendly matches.

That pressure has been eased with the recent additions of Lukić and Florentino, who played his first minutes in a Town shirt since signing permanently from relegated Burnley on Tuesday.

O’Neil said: “The first thing they bring is some numbers in there which we were short of. Obviously they bring quality as well and Premier League experience.

“Florentino with Benfica and Burnley last year, is still young but has good experience and good physicality. I thought he did well today for his 45 minutes.

“Saša is going to be a top signing for us. He’s been very good at Premier League level for a while now and has had an excellent career so far. It was a big coup from everyone at the club to convince him that this was the place for him to continue that journey. Really good work from the recruitment team and the guys above me to get everything done.

“We’re working very hard. We’re trying to coach the players and get the group here with a clear understanding of what we need to be, but also working night and day to get players in the building from elsewhere to help them.

“A big thank you to everyone above for getting all the deals done that we have and we still have a few more to go, hopefully.”

Definitely a few more needed especially in defence which at times looked disjointed need a RB and a LB another midfielder and for sure a striker with proven goal scoring in a top league.

Need a centre back to replace Greaves, I think he should be back up and also LB back up. He is to jittery to start games and is knocked off the ball to easily. A creative midfielder is needed and definitely another Striker, with an eye for goal, and a bit of experience. I can see the young Dutch keeper being the main man. Looks so composed on the ball and calm. Our new number one gave me bad memories of Muric. Hope that’s all it was, just bad memories. But the Dutch youngster looked the part more.

....quite a few more exits too, then!

Agree about the keepers. Slow and uncertain won't survive in the Prem however big you may be...but let's give everyone a fair go before the hatchets come out.

It looks like we are going to have at least 8 new starters for the Sunderland game.

That's what I like to hear.
Six more should do it....a LB,RB,LCB + an 8/9 and 10.

Gary's got one hell of a job on getting everything done, and with pieces of the jigsaw still missing and I'd say at least one, maybe two very important pieces amongst them. I wish him the very best of luck, he needs every single persons backing, whatever personal opinions they may hold.

Enciso will bring some creativity hopefully. Im hoping we are getting wan-bissaka as we need a right back and he wasnt involved today. Diop is solid, egeli needs to stay central

I do think we are nearly there. Looks like the Enciso deal is almost done (probably hear more on Monday) and then I think we just need a:
LB - Probably a backup one
RB - Probably a starter
CB - Possibly more left sided (def needed for numbers for when we play 3 at the back)

"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" I’m full of optimism !
It’s clear that all of the hard work by so many people over the last 5 years has restored the pride in this history soaked club.
Sir Alf and Sir Bobby would be proud of how the current custodians are looking after their beloved Ipswich Town. A State of the art training ground and Portman Road being constantly improved since game changer took over in 2021. This is having a massive effect on our ability to attract the next level of player required for us attempt to stay in the Premier League this season. Some may scoff at this comment but we are definitely shopping at the level that we can afford to, and how attractive we are perceived as a newly promoted team to players wanting to come here. Our Sights set on a mix of young raw talent that that uncut Diamond mixed with premier League guile and experience. You need to shop at the level we are seeing now. If we can stay up and I know it’s a big if, then we will be able to attract the next level of person which if we get everything right with lead to us becoming an established Premier League team. These signings and others that may arrive before the season starts might just write another brilliant chapter in this great old clubs rich history books !

might just be enough for us to stay up. If we can do that then who knows what that next step will look like for town. An unbelievable journey
Over the last five years

I thought that we looked very good, especially in the first half. New signings did well and some of the regulars didn't look too shabby. GON has a massive job on his hands and seems to be getting the backing from the board required. Win loose or draw we have to back the boys up to the hilt as we often do. The first 10 matches are critical, and a good/reasonable start could well determine the remainder of the season.

Keeping feet firmly on the ground, just as i wouldn't be suicidal if we had lost 0-3. We were caught too often with a simple long ball over the top,but GON and his team will o doubt be looking at this. The spaniards had at least three or four good opportunites and a premiere league team would have punished us.

Hopefully three or four new faces in the door before Sunderland.

Spot on Trevski, that’s pretty much al that’s needed. still need to strengthen the squad in next few weeks, so the club is in a really good spot, with depth. We all recall the last premier league season where we were the team with the largest number of injuries from our starting 11, that showed then how important it is to have good quality as back up too so it does frighten me that we have limited backup in some parts of the pitch.

But most importantly the club are doing a brilliant job this season so is important to stay positive, really looking forward to start of the season now! Opposition today are no push over either, they start in la liga next week.

It's pretty clear from yesterday that Ogbone, H Clarke, Hirsty, Taylor, Palmer and Philogene will move on. I think Nunez and Humphreys will stay but both looked 1/2 a level below the others at times yesterday.

Interesting takes on the incomings, Im also in agreement about Greaves as a LB back up, so another LCB coming in. Im less worried about RB where Dara, Darnell and Ben J can all do an adaquate job. I'm really impressed with Sindre and can see him as an 8 or a 10, and assuming Ensisco arrives that really only leaves another 9.

But GO (with whom I am hugely impressed) seems to know what he wants so we will see.

Ensisco a 6 and a 9 are my gaps
