Town boss Gary O’Neil says Ali Al-Hamadi is back in training after his loan exit broke down due to a medical issue, while Harry Clarke also remains at the club despite a move to Stoke City appearing close.

Al-Hamadi had been expected to join Polish side Raków Częstochowa on a temporary basis, but it was revealed on Thursday that the proposed move was off due to a cardiac issue that was identified during a medical.

The Blues striker, who spent last season on loan at Luton Town and played at the World Cup for Iraq during the summer, is widely expected to leave the club during the transfer window.

O’Neil revealed the 24-year-old has returned to Suffolk and is back among the group at Playford Road.

“Ali’s back in training with us,” he said. “Unfortunate one for him because I know it was something that he was keen to do. I’ve spoken to him a lot, he’s a great kid and I want to help him as much as I can.

“It’s unfortunate that the move didn’t quite progress for him. I’m sure there’ll be interest elsewhere, or if not we’ll take him back in our group and we help him here. They’ll have no issues.”

Clarke was also set for a move away, with the full-back’s former loan side Stoke agreeing a permanent deal with the Blues that could rise to £3.5m with add-ons.

That transfer appears to have stalled, and O’Neil revealed Clarke is still training with the club despite not featuring in Saturday’s friendly against Rayo Vallecano.

He said: “Harry Clarke wasn’t with us today, but the same with him. We’re going to support him, get him ready to play and get the most that we can out of the group.

“You know what football is like, at some moment like Wes Burns going the other day which wasn’t expected and came out of the blue. Things can change quickly, but while they’re here, they get our full support and we try and get them ready to play.

“He’s still working, there were just too many in the squad today. I knew he wouldn’t get minutes, so he trained this morning. An excellent professional, he’s worked unbelievably hard since I’ve been here.

“Just with Dara [O’Shea] starting at right-back and having Darnell [Furlong] on the bench meant that we wouldn’t need two right-backs on the bench, and it was better for Clarkey to get some work done this morning.

“Let’s see what happens over the next few weeks, I'm sure there will be some outs. We’ve got a lot of players, and I'm sure there will be some ins. Nothing that I can update you on with anything concrete at this moment.”
