U21s to Face PSG, PSV, Porto and Anderlecht

Town U21s will face PSG, FC Porto, PSV Eindhoven and RSC Anderlecht in the Premier League International Cup.

John McGreal and Chris Casement’s side qualified for the tournament for the first time after finishing finishing fifth in their inaugural season in Premier League 2.

The teams play one another once with all the Blues’ fixtures being staged at Portman Road.

Anderlecht, the previous club of Town winger Tudor Mendel (pictured), visit on Tuesday 20th October, PSV are in Suffolk a week later and PSG on Wednesday 20th January with the date of the Porto game to be confirmed.

Coincidentally, Sir Bobby Robson managed three of the five teams in the group, the Blues, PSV and Porto, during his long and illustrious career.

The U21s get their season under way on Friday evening when they host Coventry City in the Premier League Cup at the JobServe Community Stadium in Colchester (KO 7pm). The return game is yet to be set.

The Blues are also grouped with Bromley, who they travel to face on Tuesday 15th September and host on Tuesday 24th November, and West Bromwich Albion, who travel to East Anglia on Friday 9th October with Town in the Midlands on Friday 4th December.

The U21s’ and U18s’ league fixtures were released earlier in the week.

tivo added 13:30 - Aug 12 I think we actually need to 'strengthen' or at least deepen our U21 team/pool. 3 new cup competitions with group stages. Unless we plan to use the U18's in the National League Cup.

The overall standard of the u21s football needs to be much higher if they are going to produce future talent for the first team at the moment i haven't seen one who looks like making the breakthrough Tudor Mendel has looked decent at times but this is his third season at the club and now we are back in the Premier league his chances of making it at Portman road are virtually nil.

An exciting season ahead for the U21’s. Surely with the extra cup competitions and the prospect of playing against lower league and tier one and two non-league senior squads, plus some top European clubs youngsters(along with the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Man Untd U21’s in the domestic league) will mean that we won’t ship half the u21 squad out on loan this season. Perhaps playing in a settled team and being consistently schooled in the tactics required of the new manager might help their progress towards first team consideration.
