Blues U21s keeper George Barrett has joined National League South Braintree Town on loan and made his debut for the Essex side over the weekend.

The 20-year-old joined the Iron ahead of Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Dover in which he made his debut and then featured again in yesterday’s 2-0 home defeat to Farnborough, having previously played two games for the club during pre-season.

In the summer of 2025, Barrett joined Town on a one-year deal with an option for a further campaign following a trial during pre-season after his release by Walsall. Last season, he had spells on loan at Canvey Island and Enfield.

While with the Saddlers, Barrett had stints on loan with Worcester City, Wolverhampton Casuals, Dudley Town and Paget Rangers.

He was on the first-team bench for the League Two side on 16 occasions in all competitions without making a senior debut.

A fortnight ago, Barrett was stretchered off just before half-time after suffering a concussion in the U21s’ 4-2 Premier League Cup defeat to Coventry at Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium.

Barrett is the fourth Town keeper to move out on loan this summer following Kayne van Oevelen (Valencia), Cieran Slicker (Barnsley) and Henry Gray (Wellington Phoenix).
