Town Confirm Flemming Signing

Town have completed the signing of Zian Flemming from Burnley, the 14th and final signing of the summer transfer window.

After protracted negotiations, the clubs agreed an overall package ultimately worth up to £20 million with £3 million in what we understand are somewhat aspirational add-ons.

TWTD revealed this morning that Flemming was travelling to Suffolk for his medical and to complete the formalities relating to the switch with the clubs tying up the loose ends of the terms of the deal.

Those discussions continued throughout the day with the deal finally done early this evening and the player, who has penned a four-year deal, then undergoing his medical.

“I am really proud to sign for Ipswich Town," Flemming told the club site.

“I played in the Premier League last season and really enjoyed my first season at the top level, competing against the best players and teams in the world, so I am delighted to now be back in there with a great club like Ipswich.

“I will give my all every time I step onto the pitch and can’t wait to meet the supporters. The first game is on Friday against Liverpool, which is very soon, and I am excited to get started.”

Manager Gary O'Neil added: “Zian is a player who had an impressive first season in the Premier League and we are very pleased to have brought him to the club.

“He has good quality and experience and has started the new season well, so is a great addition to the group as we strengthen the squad further.”

Flemming had been tipped for a move away from Turf Moor all summer following Burnley’s relegation to the Championship with Everton, Lille and Brentford having been linked.

The Dutchman joined the Lancastrians from Millwall in August 2024, initially on loan with the move made permanent for £7 million the following summer.

Last season, Amsterdam-born Flemming netted 12 times in total, 11 in the Premier League, and this term bagged three in his first two matches.

He started his career with hometown club Ajax, featuring for their reserves side before moving on to PEC Zwolle in 2018, spending time on loan at NEC before joining Fortuna Sittard in 2020, prior to his switch to Millwall two years later.

Flemming's signing brings to a close the most extravagant transfer window in the club's history with almost £190 million having been paid out for their 14 additions, all on a permanent basis with no incoming loans. No promoted club has spent more going into the Premier League, surpassing the £160 million paid out by Sunderland last summer.

Emersonn, the first signing of the window, set a new record for the highest fee the club has paid, an initial £24 million.

The window closes with Alex Palmer, Anis Mehmeti and Jack Taylor remaining at the club despite links with Championship sides, meaning the Blues have 28 first-team players.

The plan all summer has been for veteran keeper David Button not to be included in the squad, while Abdoul Ouattara and Sindre Walle Egeli don't count towards the squad as they are under 21, taking the total of senior players to the 25-man limit.

I've gone through the squad who left I think... 25 can be registered... Egeli is under 21 so two will be unregistered... my guess, its a shame, but I think Mehmeti, and Taylor.

Just for a bit of added interest, I thought I'd add this little summing up of the players significant strengths and weaknesses taken over the past two seasons from a stat's site I use. I know not everyone likes mountains of stat's, so I'm keeping this simple! This is as written on the site.

Got to be honest didn’t know much about him but from what I’ve seen from YouTube videos this looks like a decent signing and an upgrade on Hirst. 11 goals in the PL in a struggling side isn’t a bad return. If Davis can put some good crosses in from the left hand side he’ll get his head on them. He’s a physical player so will bully defenders and can hold the ball up. Great shot and goal against the budgies as well which is a bonus!

We have really given ourselves the best chance of staying up! its sad but true but spending huge amounts doesnt guarantee success, its not a given look at spurs so far, liverpool last year!

People need to be realistic, some were going overboard after the opening day victory. we havent got a lot of cover in defence!

So a couple of things, lets get behind the team and enjoy the season ahead but keep expectations realistic!

A massive well done to MA and all those in recruitment, lots of hard work put in. probably now working on next window!

Bring on liverpool!

This is another great signing. He looked the class act in a poor Burnley side last season. However, and this is a big however, we look decent in the middle and up top, but defensively we look vulnerable so another quality centre half would have been my pick. We will not be able to outscore teams in this league, not all of the time. If we want to stay up we need to grind out some horrible results. That is this league and I want to stay in it for a while longer…

Also surprised we could not get a couple more outs as there are some players left behind that will hardly play. Also surprised we kept Palmer & Walton. I know Button will not be registered and used more as a GK coach, but means a good GK will not play at all!!! COYB

Welcome to the club Zian, good to see another Dutchman back in the side.
Good we have another striker in, but I have to say do we have a Burnley loyalty card, but there has to be a bit of understanding between Luis and him. So you can see the logic, assuming O’Neil lets him play as he has for Burnley which is something I felt that McKenna didn’t let players do.
They had to play the roles McKenna wanted and I hold up Szmodics name to that as he never had any real impact in his playing time here.
Having got Emmerson in early I’m surprised we had to let it go right to the wire for another but we have had an astonishing transfer window.
Will he come straight in against Liverpool or will Emmerson be fit? It would be interesting to see him up against Van Dijk, a player I feel gets away with far too much from the referees.

The icing on the cake this one, he's been on our radar for ages.

Lots of comments about the squad, with 28 players here to fill 27 spaces (AO and SWE under 21) which leaves us either leaving one out or paying one up and letting them relocate on free agency. I have no clue who that would be, but if Taylor is still awhile from fitness he would make most sense with Palacios, Lukic, Luis, Nunez and Matusiwa already there and fighting for 2 spaces. We will see I guess.

Flemming, for me, goes straight in on Friday. Three days of acclimatisation with the group, he's already match sharp so thats a no brainer.

One final reflection, and Im certainly no going to say I told you so because i never actually thought it would happen, but with add ons we have invested £200m in one window. Thats immense!
