O'Neil: No Problems With Where Kjell Is
Friday, 11th Sep 2026 15:55

Blues boss Gary O’Neil says there are no problems with where keeper Kjell Scherpen is as he settles into a new team and the Premier League following his move from Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise this summer.

The Dutchman, who cost an initial £8.5 million fee, was criticised for his role in Liverpool’s two goals in last week’s 2-0 home defeat to the Reds.

Quizzed on the 26-year-old’s start to his Town career in which he has conceded eight goals in three games, O’Neil said: “I think he had basically no part to play in the 5-2 at Old Trafford. In the Liverpool one, there are, of course, parts to the goal that not only Kjell but other people need to do better with.

“And the save he makes from [Dominik] Szoboszlai is a top, top save, a world class save. There are not many goalkeepers getting down to that with the speed that Szoboszlai hits the ball at.

“Kjell has our backing and he’s a good goalkeeper. He is obviously adapting to a new style, a new back four, a new league, so there are no problems with where Kjell is at.

“We are helping him and working with him and he has my full belief that he will help us tomorrow as Crystal Palace cross the ball a lot.

“Some of the work goalkeepers do can go unnoticed because the focus is on those moments when you do or don’t save your team. He has done an awful lot of good stuff.

“We have a very good goalkeeping group here – Walts [Christian Walton], Palms [Alex Palmer], Kjell, even Butts [David Button], who trains unbelievably well. We are really pleased with where they are at and obviously big backing for Kjell and the work he is doing.“

O’Neil says heads haven’t dropped despite the defeats to Manchester United and Liverpool, which followed the 2-1 opening-day win at home to Sunderland.

“No, we have won one game and we have lost against two of the top three or four in the league,” he said. “The order in which the results come are irrelevant.

“If we had gone draw, draw, draw, everyone would be going ’you are still unbeaten’, but we’s still only be on three points.

“So the fact we beat Sunderland and then lost against Manchester United and Liverpool, the order of them is irrelevant to me. It’s just the next challenge is Crystal Palace and we want three points.

“We thought we delivered a game plan and a level of commitment that would give us an opportunity against Manchester United and Liverpool. It did in large parts.

“It didn’t end up giving us any points, but it did give us a belief that we can compete. We have an understanding of what can go wrong and where we need to fix things.

“Crystal Palace will test us yet again as it is a tough place to go. Selhurst Park is a very small pitch with an intense atmosphere.

“So there will be moments in the game where we need to suffer and dig in. We need to find a way to come through those difficult spells slightly better than we have in the last two games.“

Reflecting further on the Liverpool performance, he added: “I thought it was a good effort. It was disappointing to concede two so early, which made it difficult. But the response to it being difficult was excellent.

“I think everyone watching, especially having lost to Manchester United five days before, and seeing it 2-0 after nine minutes, could have feared that Liverpool would go on to dominate that game and run away with it. And that wasn’t the case.

“It remained a competitive football match for the whole of the evening, which was positive. The amount of control and threat that we carried in it, I thought was positive.

“And there is some room for improvement, of course. We got punished for a couple of mistakes against top opposition, which we know can happen in the Premier League, so we have spoken about those spells in games a bit already.

“But it was a game we gave everything in. We just came up a little short. We get ready to do it again.“

Quizzed on the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel backing the decision to allow Manchester United’s second goal during that match, albeit with one of the five panel members seeing the handball by Harry Maguire prior to Jacob Greaves’s own goal as deliberate, O’Neil says it’s now in the past.

“Someone told me about it – I haven’t paid much attention to it,”he continued. “I don’t know, I don’t think the goal should stand, we’ve had that conversation already on whether it is the rule’s fault.

“But it is two weeks ago and there is not much we can do about it. We’ve moved on from it. I expect the rules to change if they haven’t already around that incident.

“It being an own goal and that making a difference doesn’t feel like it should make a difference, and whether it is accidental or not is open to debate.

“But I am trying to go back two weeks to remember what we spoke about before. Let’s just go to Crystal Palace and try and get three points.“

Poor that he's even had to face these questions, to be honest. Media yet again playing their unwanted part.

He's doing just fine. Yes, a couple of mistakes but some excellent saves too. Distribution also very good.

Agree with O'Neil. Let's not make this another Muric & destroy the lad after three exceptionally tough games & under current conditions of5adapting. Too many negative people. Give him space & chance to grow & give him encouragement. That's the Ipswich way.

Poor ten minutes against Liverpool, where he should have done better. But overall he’s been pretty solid. Certainly have more confidence in him than I would Walton.

GON handled that very well! It’s as old as football itself, keeper makes a mistake and gets crucified outfield players make mistakes and not so much, like GON says others could have should done better!

Sam white. Didnt mean to downmark you. Ur absolutely right. Shouldn't be asked questions like that when we're only 3 games into the season. And fans who are already slagging off certain players, need to wind their neck in. Always connemara be a few teething issues with so many new players. In general, weve shown webcam compete. Cut out the few errors weve made and im sure we'll be ok. And if we're not it won't be for the lack of trying.

Lot of short memories here. Muric was kept in our team way too long making similar types of mistakes and indecision which cost us goals and so many points. McKenna should have taken him out of the team much earlier and we may well have survived if he had done so. But he persisted with Muric until it was way too late. I guess that’s what some posters call being nice, “the Ipswich way”. Well do we really want to do that again? Nice Ipswich yes but come on. I for one would like to see GON act decisively and play Walton tomorrow. He’s a great keeper and many are utterly confused why he was not our automatic number 1 to start this season after he’d recovered from his preseason injury. We can still back and support Scherpen but it needs to be on the training pitch we build his confidence not on match day when he’ll cost us more points. Come on GON show some leadership here and make “the Ipswich way” mean something different - making decisions that will keep us in this division rather than ones that could repeat our last experience. Don’t let Scherpen become the Muric Deja vue please

Agreed Londonblue52. "no part to play in the 5-2 at Old Trafford" - All for mgr supporting his players in public, but for their fifth, he came off his line, didn't get there and was lobbed. As long as GON knows that privately, then all is well.

I will admit I have always been a Walton fan & he finds himself yet again unlucky.
2 years ago almost to the day against Brighton Muric played a blinder
But we all know what happened later

Not even going to debate the merits or otherwise of a certain keeper that is now plying his trade successfully in Serie A. Just going to say, let's give KS a few more games at the very least before the unappointed judge and jury sends him to the gallows.

Agreed, usual story, overreaction from the few louder then the voices of the many... we know it takes time to adjust and we can all see there is a top keeper in there.

He's much less eratic (crazy) then Muric and seems a much safer pair of hands. His distribution and general presence is also top.

It's ridiculous putting pressure on him after 3 games...yes mistake against Pool but other than that he's done okay.

Facebook is awash with comments about Walton, but the harsh truth is the Football Club have signed 4 keepers, Muric, Palmer, Scherpen and Van Ovelen, because they don't rate him as PL quality.
I don't get why our fans can't just accept what the club has done and move on. We don't get this with Fatawu and Burns, or with Emersonn and Hirst.
I'm sick of quoting the stats, Walton had a great season last season at Championship level, but so did Furlong, so did Kipre, So did Matusiwa. Those players are miles off being in the first xi, wheres the (daft) outcry for them?
Kjell will be fine, let's get behind him not on his back.
Oh, and whilst we are on about it, 2 years ago, Muric (despite his errors) saved 23% more shots on target than CW.
Can we move on now please?

This is another muric and O'Neil will just let sherpen carry on ,until it is too late.when will a manager ever learn?well never it seems

Edmundo added 09:08 - Sep 12
Sherpen doesn't let them in, the team makes errors. Those who've never and will never understand clearly never played the game beyond a hungover Sunday morning.

From what I’ve seen pre season and over the 1st 3 games.
Our best keeper plays in La Liga…..All be it still early days.

Edmundo, exactly. There were 5 outfield players making errors of various kinds in the build up to Liverpool's first goal, yet none of them have been given a hard time like Scherpen has. It's like 6 links in a bicycle chain breaking one after the other and the final one that breaks gets all the blame. What's just as bad is that JG was getting it in the neck after their second, even though he had to try and dash across to cover as the right side of the defence had gone AWOL. It's a funny old game!
