Town Women Host London City Lionesses in Players Cup Wednesday, 30th Sep 2026 10:24 Ipswich Town Women host big-spending WSL side London City Lionesses in their first game in the Subway Players Cup at the JobServe Community Stadium in Colchester this evening (KO 7.30pm, live on YouTube). David Wright’s team have made a strong start to the season in WSL2, drawing two and then winning two to sit third in the table. The Lionesses, backed by billionaire owner Michele Kang, have also begun their campaign positively, winning three and drawing one of their top-flight games to sit fourth but only three points off the top. Both sides are likely to make changes this evening, giving some of their fringe players a run-out. “It’s a game we’re really looking forward to, especially with it being under the lights in front of our own supporters,” manager Wright said. “London City are a very good team and I’ve watched a couple of their matches already this term. “They recruited really well in the summer and have some outstanding players across the pitch, so we are expecting a tough night. “We should play with freedom like we have been doing since the start of the campaign and if we do that we give ourselves every opportunity of picking up a result.” The teams met in what was then known as the Subway Women’s League Cup in Colchester last season with the Lionesses running out 2-0 victors. The competition for WSL and WSL2 clubs has switched format as well as name with 23 teams taking part in one league table during the group stage during 2026/27, playing six matches in a regionalised section. The top eight clubs at the end of the league phase go through to the quarter-finals. Following tonight’s match, Town face Wolves, Watford, Charlton, Southampton and Tottenham in their other fixtures.
