Seventies Town striker David Johnson has suffered a heart attack while away coaching with some of his ex-Liverpool team-mates in Singapore. The man known as Jonty during his time at Town underwent surgery and is expected to make a recovery.

Johnson, 52, collapsed and was rushed to hospital where surgeons operated on a blocked artery.

Town legend John Wark, who was with both the Blues and Liverpool with Johnson, was given the news by Alan Kennedy who runs Liverpool's ex-players' association.

Wark said: "It looks as if he is going to be okay. Alan Kennedy rang to tell me what had happened. I felt so helpless when I heard and I'm just relieved that he seems to be on the mend.

"It wasn't clear when he'll be able to fly home, but Alan seemed hopeful of him getting on a flight in a few days' time."

Johnson joined Town from Everton in 1972, scoring 46 goals in 178 appearances. He won three of his eight England caps with the Blues.

He left Portman Road for Liverpool in a £200,000 deal in 1976, and won four League Championships, three European Cups, two League Cups and two European Super Cups during his time at Anfield.
