Blues defender Tommy Smith said it was an “unbelievable honour” to captain New Zealand for the first time as he led his side to a 2-2 friendly draw with El Salvador in Houston overnight. The 22-year-old took the armband in the absence of regular skipper Ryan Nelsen and could soon be named the Tottenham man’s vice-captain and likely successor.

Town defender Tommy Smith has been confirmed as captain of New Zealand for their two friendlies in the US. The All Whites are in action against El Salvador in Houston overnight and against Honduras in Dallas on Sunday. Coach Ricki Herbert had been expected to name a more experienced player as regular skipper Ryan Nelsen’s replacement for the two US-based games.

Town are understood to be in talks with out-of-contract Stoke striker Ricardo Fuller, who looks likely to leave the Britannia Stadium this summer. The one-time Blues loanee was previously linked with a return to Portman Road in April when Wigan and Cardiff were also said to be interested in the 32-year-old.
