Wayway, yes I saw Viljoen, a superb player on his day, and such a shame he had fallen out with the club the season we finally fulfilled our potential and won the FA Cup.
My point wasn't meant to demean the great achievements of the 70's early 80's, where we could compete on an even keel with the best in Europe, merely to point out that, as you admit, Sir Bobby had his faults too. We just didn't have a forum available to us at the time, where every armchair fan could whinge continually after watching the odd live game on Sky. If you didn't go to the game, you made do with three or four column inches in the newspaper the following day.
Football (not soccer oldegold!!) is now a completely different game, and much poorer for all the money available to the select few. The football under MM is far removed from the thrilling, attacking teams of Robson, Burley and at times even Royle. However, it might just finally get us out of this division and give us a slice of the appalling but sadly necessary riches of the top division. A means to an end. I'd rather be in with a shout of success playing percentage football, than watching the spineless & clueless drivel served up by Jewell & Keane. I got no pleasure seeing us lose 7-1 & 6-0 with a team full of tosspots who didn't give a damn whilst we rotted away at the foot of the table.
This lot have been cobbled together for virtually nothing because of the money spaffed up the wall by the previous two clowns. Somehow, MM & TC have produced a functional and effective unit that is hard to beat yet wins enough games to be in with a sniff of something we haven't got close to for 10 years
Get your noses out of the air, stop living in a halcyon past that will never happen again, and get behind a bunch of players who actually want to play for the shirt. Total football it ain't, but after the last ten years of showponies and mercenaries, I'll take it while we wait for the managerial genius who'll have us passing in lovely triangles, scoring 100 goals whilst thrilling the armchair/keyboard massive with a team assembled from loose change down the back of the sofa.

I assume you're an old school rose-spectacled Bobby Robson fan who believes we played total football throughout his reign. However, for the 7 years before Muhren & Thijssen arrived, our main tactic was to lump it towards Whymark and hope Johnson would feed off the knock downs.
I was a season ticket holder throughout the 70's. It was a wonderful time but far from, the total football Utopia we're lead to believe existed.
This forum is both a blessing & a curse. A wonderful resource in principal, but a divisive and eye-opening insight into the minds of fellow fans, many of whom I wouldn't wish to share the time of day with. The strangest thing is, I never encounter these keyboard warriors at a game. I truly wonder how many of them actually leave the comfort of their computers.
I'm sure that if a similar forum was available in the 70's, there would have been many 'supporters' calling for Sir Bobby's head following the 7-0 aberration at Sheff Utd, the 5-0 footballing lesson at Leicester & the countless other occasions when we were utter tripe.
We are what we are at present. A functional and dramatically over-achieving unit of freebies and rejects, assembled for a fraction of the money spent by teams who are staring at relegation this season.
Yes it isn't pretty, but it might just get us up. Then we can get rid of MM & TC, bring in a footballing scholar who believes in ‘total football,' pleases every purist football fan who watches us on Sky, spaff 20 million up the wall on a bunch of footballing show-ponies who pass in pretty triangles, still get relegated & moan about another decade in the 2nd division. Oh, I can't wait….. in the meantime, where was I? Oh yes, shame on you Oldegold for your pretentiousness!

I've seen him three times for the U21s and his feet are quicker than his brain and he drifts out of games & runs himself into blind alleys. Mick bases his team around a huge work ethic & this lad shows little inclination to do the running & harrying. An unnecessary luxury in our current system, only likely to produce once in every six or so games. Much like JET, League 1 is his level. The only thing in his favour is 4 goals in 90 odd games, a return that comfortably matches the strike rate of our current midfield.. .

A fair and reasoned argument Oldegold, and I agree there's no place for name calling on this forum. I get frustrated with the pro/anti MM wars that erupt after every game. The truth lies somewhere inbetween I feel. Some of his selections and tactics don't reflect the all attacking philosophy of Sir Bobby's 70's dreamteam, but I saw some shockers in that time as well and we weren't averse to the long punt upfield prior to Muhren & Thijssen's arrival.
MM is, however, a breath of fresh air after the recent appalling mis-management we've suffered. With no money he's fashioned a highly effective unit that has revived our beloved club, and I believe he and TC deserve immense credit for the fantastic job they've done in turning around the embarrassing shambles they inherited.
Reasoned debate I'm all for, but let's not call each other morons and idiots, however tempted I feel every time Hegansheroes puts finger to keyboard! COYB |

Oldegold, did you really think the 0-0 at home to Wigan was our worst performance 'in many a year'? I could easily give you a hatful of worse performances in the last 6/7 years under Magilton,Jewell & Keane when we were spinless capitulators shipping 7 to Peterborough, 6 to Blackpool, 5 at home to Norwich, 3 at home to Doncaster & Sheff Weds. Typical of the complete overreaction and short-term memories we get on here. Yes Wigan was an ugly performance but let's have some perspective here. I much prefer knowing the odd poor performance doesn't have us looking over our shoulder at league 1 football (not soccer!)

A contributor who has recently referred to MM as a 'moron' an 'arrogant prxck' and a 'useless coach' with 'no integrity' Blueboy seems to get all the baiting on here, but it's the likes of Hegansheroes that really gets my goat. Rant over, fantastic performance and atmosphere today. Proof positive that a decent manager & coach can deliver the goods if given time and shown some patience.
