Obv always happy not to lose
at 12:14 5 Nov 2023

It does feel like we might need to make more use of the squad, our starting 11 have played a lot of minutes and there have been a few games recently where we have been below our best. Good to see Scarlett, Hutchinson and Harness making a statement and pushing for starting places. Would be good to see more of Taylor, Axel, Humphreys and Ball too.

Plymouth don't win many away
at 09:15 13 Mar 2023

Think we need our noses in front by early April. 4 of their last 5 games are at home and not particularly tough fixtures.

I still have a nagging doubt Barnsley will be right in the mix. Their next 3 games are Wycombe (A), Sheff Wed (H) then us. If they do well in those fixtures they will be a huge threat. They are at the top of the form league with ourselves and Sheff Wed.

Wednesday v Plymouth next week then…
at 11:43 27 Jan 2023

A draw I think but I am still concerned about Derby. On a great run and they have 4 home games in Feb and most of their fixtures are against bottom half teams. Only tricky fixture would appear to be away to Barnsley. They are 4 pts behind us with a game in hand. We slip up at all, it easily becomes a 4 horse race, much more unpredictable.

Keogh and Fridge were solid tonight.

Would like to see more of Keogh. A real leader on the pitch and he played some excellent passes out of defence to get attacks going. May need to be used sparingly. His passing would be curtailed by a team that presses high and he may well be exposed against pacy strikers but I thought he made a big difference last night.

Still pretty positive but I have this nagging doubt that has been growing over the past few weeks. If it is indeed a 3 horse race I would fancy our chances. But Derby and Barnsley are going well at the moment. It it ends up that 4 or 5 teams are fighting for automatic I think it will be a it more of a lottery and you would fancy one of the teams relegated last year to take one of the automatics leaving us fighting for the remaining place.

Subs today
at 13:17 14 Jan 2023

Going to be very interesting to see who the subs are today. Could be a similar first XI as against Portsmouth (illness affected the Lincoln line up more)

Walton
Donacien, Woolfenden, Burgess
Burns, Evans, Morsy, Davis
Chaplin, Harness
Ladapo

Apart from Hladky we have 6 places on the bench with the following presumably available

Keogh
Edmonson
KVY
Jackson
Edwards
Humphreys
Ahadme
Aluko
Leigh
Hirst
Broadhead
Luongo

Tough to choose from that group.

Luongo seems a shrewd bit of business

I imagine that is a symptom of recruiting in January. More likely to secure players not figuring in the campaign.

Journo’s releasing info on transfer targets
at 20:58 5 Jan 2023

It's a dilemma for the local guys. They want/need to protect their relationship with the club but on the other hand if signings are getting widely reported elsewhere (like Mel Henderson in the Mirror), they can't be seen to be behind the curve.

The picture taken in front of a dark stadium would suggest the Luongo signing announcement has been rushed out by the club, probably in response to the widespread speculation it was happening.

Pattern emerging with potential signings
at 19:28 5 Jan 2023

Looking at the write ups on Hirst, Luongo, Broadhead and Corbeanu, they all seem to have performed well at League 1 level but struggled this year in the Championship. Presumably the recruitment team feel they are the kind of players we need to get us out of League 1 but do they feel these players could be developed to make more impression on the Championship next season.

A comment from ITFC_Joe earlier got me thinking.

I think it was identified at the end of last season that we would require a more physical team to get out of this league. Ball, Ahadme and Camara would all seem to fit this criteria and it's unfortunate that they have all suffered from injuries. I would not be surprised to see one or two more robust players join during this transfer window.

Plymouth + Sheff Wed
at 09:27 3 Jan 2023

Football is very much about momentum, especially for promotion chasing teams. At the moment that momentum is with Wednesday and Plymouth with Derby and Barnsley also pulling themselves gradually into the race for the automatic spots. Along with Wycombe those teams hold the top 5 spots in the form table over the last six, we have slipped to eighth.

However, we now have a couple of weeks with major opportunities to switch momentum towards us.

We have the transfer window open and as KMK said in his thinly veiled challenge to the board, we need to recruit well. We have seen before how one or two key additions can reignite a team.

We have a 'nothing to lose' cup tie against an opponent with only one win in 10. Morale boosting win or concentrate on the league if we lose.

We have a home game against Plymouth. A chance to ignite our campaign and put down a marker.

Feels like a key period in this season.

A win on Monday and that will be a good haul over the festive season, especially with lots of players coming back from injury.

I'm thinking more about buffer to top 2. I really do not want to go through the play-offs experience again.

Over the last 4 games Barnsley have made up 6 points on us and Sheff Wed have made up 4 pts. If we keep shipping late goals that 3 way contest for automatic could easily become a 4 or 5horse race.

I think we all know one team around or below the play-offs will go on a huge winning streak later this season, if we keep missing opportunities to create a massive buffer we will pay the price.

Transfer Window Priority
at 09:59 3 Dec 2022

I know we have long debated the need to strengthen certain positions on the pitch but I feel the over-riding need at the moment is to bring in one or two players with a stronger mentality. The fact that we keep conceding late goals on a regular basis shows there is a leadership vacuum at key moments within our team.

We have Morsey who obviously is a leader out on the pitch but we need more. I had hoped that Keogh might have been that player but that does not seem to be the case. I don't particularly mind what position they play (striker, No.10 or attacking midfielder would be best of course) but we need one or two stronger characters to help us over the line in situations like last night.

Our team feels like a tight-knit group of talented players led by a very competent coaching team but increasingly teams will come to Portman Road and always think they have a chance unless we display more mental strength.

What do we want/need in January and is anybody leaving?
at 15:21 29 Nov 2022

A tough transfer window for the recruitment team. We need to balance covering for longer-term injuries with not saddling ourselves with players that will not get a look in once the injury situation subsides, players that could play at a higher level. Long-term vs short term considerations. Also, I am sure clubs will be looking to get hefty fees from us and play hardball so we may not see some key incomings unto the end of the window.

Biggest priority for me is central midfield. Only 2 fit players currently with 2 players (Evans and Camara) with poor recent injury records.

It feels like we need a striker to convert some of the many chances we create but with Ladapo finding some form recently and Ahadme now in the team, they have a month to prove they have the firepower we need.

We do need a No.10 quite urgently with TJJ and Harness both out. But it is an area when at full strength we are pretty strong so any incomers would need to be very high quality to keep their place in the squad once at full strength.

Given how important they are to the team, some cover for Leigh/David/Edwards could be prudent.

Injuries - overall situation?
at 09:11 28 Nov 2022

Seems about right. My concern is central midfield. It's asking a lot of Humphries and if we lose Morsy we will have to play a defender or a forward player in there. I wonder what the recall terms are for El Miz and Harper.
