Chepstow - you’re obviously too young to have seen my first Town hero - Frank Brogan. I only ever saw him miss one penalty and then he scored from the rebound off the keeper! |

TimmyH. Come on, give the bloke a break. I thought by now most people knew why we lost the 75 semi & then won the 78 semi. See my blog; A Fable from the Past from Sept 2022. It had nothing to do with bad refereeing. |

Careful 1967. From memory the Southend programme was reprinted & inserted in a matchday programme, presumably in 1988 to celebrate 50 years. Would explain the mint condition! |

Bit of respect for Mick O’Brien, Phil. 64.1% win percentage and the Irishman who got the professional ITFC ball rolling in the first place. |

Bazza – I often wonder who ruffled your feathers to make you so negative about previous regimes at Portman Road. You talk so much sense about players, tactics, etc. and yet make so many questionable statements about the club from the past. To quote: ‘I remember as a young man meeting Robson and some of the 70’s players, they didn’t have a minute for you’. Now I admit that my first game was in the year that you were born so I have age advantage over you but believe me, you would bump into players on any night in town in those days only too pleased to be bought a drink. Admittedly as a young teenager then it would not be you putting your hand in your pocket! Another quote: ‘How can anyone think we didn’t have owners in the Burley era’. The Board in those days was composed of minority shareholders. To believe that Town had ‘owners’ is a fundamental misunderstanding of the composition of ITFC at that time. The Cobbold family did not own the club. I’m very pleased for the current generation who for 20 years have had to put up with us old so and so’s telling them how it was before (although presumably not you!). Their enthusiasm reflects that of my youth. The employment of Ashton was an excellent move, coming at the perfect time, I feel, in his career development. And then offering McKenna the Manager’s job was a stroke of genius, a real ‘Ipswich way’ move, so similar to Ramsey’s appointment and so far, with the same result! Now he’s just got to win the Premier League by 2028 with Ipswich! It's difficult not to get swept up in the enthusiasm at Portman Road these days as so many things are now being done the right way. But let’s not denigrate the past which was every bit as exciting to previous generations as the current one is to today’s youngsters. |
| News Comment | Woolfenden: We're Comfortable Playing Out From the Back at 13:52:27
Bazza: These days a number of Town games from the 70's and 80's are on YouTube with some quite lengthy clips. I too was expecting the blood and thunder games of my memories but I think that, like me, you'd be surprised to see that Town often played it from a keeper's throw in their own half and their midfield play was quite frequently studiously built up, not surprising with players like Thijssen and Muhren in the team. What impressed me most was the way that Town would continually vary their attacking approach play in the same match. |

Indeed dusth. I always remember that after the game the Town fans just walked right through the middle of the rowdiest of the West Ham fans as though they couldn't be hurt anymore. But at least, with retrospect, we now might have an idea of why we lost. |

Lovely piece of measured writing that dusth. Thank you, I enjoyed it. |
| News Comment | EFL Matches Postponed as Mark of Respect at 07:12:42
I can't help but feel that the establishment, who rarely put a foot out of place, have slipped up on this call. Most people's affection for the monarchy was tied up with respect for Elizabeth and the work she did in her long lifetime. What follows her death is very much open to debate. But imagine full football grounds today, united as one, with that feeling of togetherness which the occasion engenders. The remaining monarchy will need all the help that they can get and someone's missed a trick here. Maybe the FA is now being run by Republicans! Although what I actually suspect happened was that the FA and the monarch's people both had meetings at the same time and the FA came to its conclusion without waiting for the word from the throne or knowing that advice was going to come. |

Thanks all for your kind words and to TWTD for allowing me to indulge in a short history lesson! I have become concerned that too many people these days are unaware of just what an amazing and unique club it is we support. And you're right Elephant, McGarry did a fantastic job in turning 1967-68 from a maybe season to a championship season with those two signings - I still remember every detail of those last fifteen games as I'm sure that you do. |
