Louis Reed (ex Posh midfielder)
at 19:15 6 Aug 2021

Well by way of update Louis Reed has today signed for Town! Unfortunately that is Swindon Town! I did not see that one coming! I do not know the length of contract signed.

This is despite playing some 5 or 6 preseason trial games for Doncaster and impressing in most. Strange goings on at Doncaster pre season, seem to have been giving trials to all and sundry in the knowledge not really in a position to offer contracts due to financial constraints/need to release players first.

Really surprised no other League 1 club has snapped Reed up, but who knows what other offers he may or may not have had. No disrespect to Swindon Town, but I think Reed is way too good for League 2 and this is a real coup for them. I suspect it will not be too long before Reed is back playing in League 1 or above where he belongs, but I am glad he is at least sorted with a club for the new season, and this could prove to be a fantastic bit of business for Swindon Town.

Enjoy the Morecambe game!

Hello J2BLUE . Just to clarify my latest post was not supposed to be a reposte to Matt Netherlands comment as such and sorry if you read it as such, rather it was just an update generally on the Reed situation really and noting that he is still available. Believe me I don't take stuff too seriously, least of all football!

Matt Netherlands I can only assume you are a cynic by nature ?

I am no more than a Town fan of some 40 plus years who I expect like many on here, especially those of a similar advancing age, have found much of what has been served up at Portman Rd for a number of years now pretty depressing.

I want what is best for the club, and with that in mind I posted my original post on here flagging up a player who I have seen quite a lot of playing for Posh and was aware is currently unattached having been released by them, and commented why I thought be could be a significant asset to Town and should be on Towns radar.

Obviously a lot of new players have now been bought in by the club and these are now exciting times for Town fans and hopefully we are now on the cusp of something special. We seem to still be a few quality squad players short though and I remain of the view Reed would be an asset. I did not watch the Colchester game last night and obviously the team and especially the defence that started last night will not be the starting X1 when the real stuff kicks off. Nevertheless whilst the attacking side of the team has thankfully it seems been well addressed, the defensive side it seems may still need some work.

Reed is a deep holding midfielder who would add another line of cover offering some protection for the back four, tackles and breaks up opposition attacks, but perhaps more importantly and what Town have really been missing he can link back to front with tidy and incisive passing. As previously advised as a bonus he also poses an attacking threat and arrives late to support attacks and possesses a good shot which he is not afraid to unleash. Basically have here in one player attributes which Town previously struggled to get with any consistency from Downes, Bishop, Dozell, Skuse combined.

It is probable Reed will start for Doncaster again tonight in another friendly against Sheff Utd. The Doncaster press today seem to be suggesting Donny are now keen to get a deal done with him, but they still have ongoing issues in terms of having to release players to free up funds for contracts for new players. So as things stand he is still just 'A. Trialist".

Obviously football is a game of opinions. Mine is that Reed is a tidy and intelligent footballer who would improve our team/squad. Available, aged 24, proven at league 1, injury free and with possible future sell on value too, ticks all the boxes for me anyway. The Posh and Doncaster fans seem largely to rate him too so I don't think I am alone in seeing something in him. I admit I do not know much about some of the new players Town have bought in or seen much of them before so Cook may already have one of those as first choice for this type of deep midfield role (Evans or Harper maybe?) and may not be looking to strengthen/add in this area.

I expect Donny will try very hard to get a deal done over the next few days but it is not done yet and I for one would be very happy to see Reed in a Town shirt. Obviously the Donny fans would be pretty upset that they had let a good player slip through the net and had effectively got him match fit for a League 1 rival, whether this be us or another League 1 club.

As an aside, talking of slipping through the net, I think Donny need a keeper so maybe we could try to sell them Holy just to add insult to injury.

Louis Reed (ex Posh midfielder)

Louis Reed (midfielder) was released by Posh at the end of last season.

I saw quite a lot of Posh during 19/20 when Reed was pretty much an ever present in a very good Posh side (probably only denied promotion by the points per game fiasco) and always thought he looked a quality player and wished we had someone like him at Town. Short in stature yes but with a real presence and tenacity about him...team player, great tackler, tidy in possession, forward/creative passing and an eye for goal too and certainly not afraid to shoot (and can really strike a ball cleanly). He fell down the pecking order a bit during the 20/21 season but I was not sure why, for with the exception of possibly Sammy Szmodics I always thought he offered more than other midfielders often being picked ahead of him, but when called upon he still always delivered. I know a lot of Posh fans rated him and thought he could do a job in the championship too and are disappointed he has been released. Posh don't make many mistakes in the transfer market but when they released Reed and were then linked (albeit just speculatively maybe) with our Flynn Downes, I could not help but think this would not be the best business they had ever done!

Given that his roots were in the north (began career at Sheff Utd I believe) I suspected a League 1 club like Doncaster/Bolton/Lincoln might sign him up (or maybe MK Dons or Camb Utd more locally) and indeed Doncaster have taken him on trial and he has now played three trial games. Doncaster seem to have a few issues in terms of needing to release players before signing others and the indication seemed to be at the start of the trial that for this reason it was unlilkely it would lead to a contract. However it seems his performances in these games have not gone unnoticed by local media and fans alike with comments such as he looks a class above etc and a call by some fans to get him signed up after their friendly tonight against Newcastle Utd. I believe Donny's first goal tonight came about when the Newcastle keeper spilled a Reed shot from distance and the rebound was put away.

I think Reed would be a fantastic signing for Town from what I have seen of him and what we have been missing for so long in our midfield. He is proven at League 1, young at 23, does not have injury problems, and all in all is what I would call a proper no nonsense footballer who just plays the game as it should be played. I would perhaps compare his game with Matt Holland's, and if he was half as good for Town as Matt Holland was then he would be some addition to the squad.

So I would love Town to cheekily go and try and get Reed before he does possibly sign for Doncaster or another league 1 club. As I said above I think Donny have a few problems in terms of needing to release players so even if they want to sign him now they may not be in a position to do so yet, and I am sure Town could offer him a more attractive deal (apart from any possible northern club bias of course) that in the grand scheme of things would still be a relatively cheap deal for Town, and I really think he could be a fantastic player for Town, definitely at league 1 level and probably (hopefully) beyond. In terms of risk and reward I think this could be a great bit of business.

Anyway if as looks likely however he does sign for Donny then I think they will have got themselves a proper player on their hands and I will look forward (or not!) to seeing how he performs against Town this season.

Enjoy the new season everybody, much better times ahead for Town hopefully!

Bit surprised Nigel Clough not being mentioned at all, especially as looking like Burton will be relegated
