I saw him play against Leyton Orient and I wonder if by that point in the season fatigue was starting to show. I was surprised: 1) how lightweight he looked - not keen on competing in the tackle and sat off more than was ideal for his side 2) how much better he looked than other players on the pitch in terms of the subtlety of his touch and passing |

I think to be devastated would be to miss the bigger picture - it's just what happens |

Agree but I think it might be better to accept that he is going to move on and think optimistically about the type of options we might get in for a far smaller fee to compete with Townsend. This squad and its approach is going to have to evolve without some of the components that got us here. Teams are going to be ready for Ipswich this time, so McKenna is going to have to think hard about our tactical approach next season. I don't think we'll win games outscoring teams the way we used to. The chips just aren't going to fall the way they did in the two promotion seasons. Does that involve acquiring a more orthodox left back? Does it mean a change of approach where our LB has less responsibility/distance to cover than Leif did? Who knows, but the combination of him being pinned back and a sluggish two-man midfield left us really struggling to pull the strings, move the ball up the pitch and expose space behind full backs the way we used to. The tactics that got us to the PL have been in several Athletic articles. Easier league or not, they're going to be so ready for us. |

Whilst I agree with this, my gripe with Muric, beyond the easy saves he has failed to make at points, is that he has an odd way of addressing the ball before distributing to the defence. The 'pausa' became fashionable a couple of years ago and we saw Brighton defenders and Woolfenden rolling the ball with their foot out in front of them. The advantage of this is the ball is in a neutral position and can be distributed either way with either foot - difficult for the pressing team to close down effectively. Muric I have noticed at points pauses on the ball whilst leaving it on one foot. So he is giving the presser an opportunity to attack the ball whilst also making it obvious the direction he will distribute the ball in. This enables the other pressers to close down their man and suddenly we are under severe pressure and in a situation where we cannot deploy our usual inviting of the press and playing through it manoeuvre. Basically I think work is needed on the training ground to get Muric thinking about sequences of play and how his holding of the ball effects the game in front of him. Admittedly, the Championship will be far less brutal in this respect. |

I don't disagree with anything that's been said above. It's not so much a revamp as a natural state of quite a few leaving even barring an exodus where teams really go in for Omari, Davis, O'Shea (I don't think that will happen by the way) But yes I don't know if we have a single midfielder as it stands (with loanees going) who is actually up to the quality needed to make us competitive at the top end of the Championship. That's not writing anyone off but I don't think we'll have the same x factor we had on the way up this time - there will need to be new bodies to propel us. I know Palmer has been alright but I do fear we've got 3 GK's of relatively similar standard in the building at the moment and we're kind of just hoping one of them will be able to distinguish themselves. Palmer obviously has the gloves at the moment but I do think Muric still probably has the higher ceiling even if it seems also a lack of game intelligence. |

I have a spare ticket for Bournemouth - too busy at work to attend now. Please do not reply saying send it back to the club. I don't have it with me right now and I'll do just that if nobody wants it but by the time I can I don't think they'll have time to put it back on sale, hence this. DM me. |

Agree and I thought the speakers were pretty horrible as well, just pumping noise into the stadium and taking away any of the natural atmosphere |

No it's not the nineties but these things go in cycles... like so many tactics, it's an obsolete approach until someone brings it back and uses it to good effect |

Yep completely misunderstood - thought he was a keeper! Nice that a youth player was trusted with involvement! |

Hadn't noticed Tom Taylor on the bench on Monday... is this because Slicker is also injured? |

I wouldn't give Newcastle much chance in this year's competition personally |

I'd like to agree but it honestly reminded me of watching Harry Clarke tbh - he was dreadful against Brentford.. Thought JD might have fared better than Godfrey did though Johnson has struggled to get tight to his man when playing there but I think he'd have done better than Godfrey |
