1600 Norwich Away
at 09:57 28 Mar 2024

Norfolk constabulary have stated they are expecting 1600 Ipswich fans for the East Anglian derby.

I thought we used to get 2000, but maybe the posters were right and they have reduced it slightly for us this season?

Did Freddie get the last touch for the goal?

It looked like Chaplins strike may have come off Ladapo before going in the net?

Anyone else think the same?

Defining moments by each player this season
at 10:07 10 May 2023

I was thinking that the majority of our players have had a significant involvement (moment) in game(s) that have got us promoted.

I also have purposefully not included the same game twice.

Please feel free to add to the list or add your own moment per player.

1 Walton - A) Bolton. For me the Penalty save at Bolton, we were 1-0 up, and if we had of conceded, who knows what momentum that may have given Bolton.

3 Davis - H) Sheff Wed. Many assists but the deflected free kick that drew us level, was as important as the magical Broadhead free kick earlier in the game.

4 Edmundson - A) Morecambe. Goal that drew us level, at the beginning of the 2nd half, before we went on to grab the winner.

5 Morsy - A) Forest Green. What a goal and also our first away game of the season. Morsy has been absolutely instrumental for our midfield this season, but have gone with the goal early in the season, against a newly promoted side.

6 Woolfenden - A) MK Dons. I could have given this game to Morsy for his goal, however Woolfy's goal line clearance at 0-0 was part of the catalyst for our good winning run and clean sheet run.

7 Burns - H) Portsmouth. After being pegged back for the second time, the header from inches out was much needed. Portsmouth were flying high in the league at the time, and to go back into the lead 3-2, minutes after the equaliser, was just what was needed.

8 Evans - H) Bolton. First game of the season, but what a goal. Low corner routine, caught Bolton napping and our first goal of the season.

9 Ladapo - A) Fleetwood. Goal number 100 for the season.

10) Chaplin - A) Accrington. Chaplin started on the bench, but came on to grab a brace at a ground where we have had our troubles in the past. Could have also been his hat trick at H) Charlton or the goal of the season A) Derby.

11) Harness - A) Burton. A very tight and tough away fixture. Harness goal, and who can forget the long Knee slide.

14) John-Jules - A) Shrewsbury. A fine individual goal

15) Burgess - A) Portsmouth. The first equaliser in our away game at Fratton Park - could easily have been the 2nd goal at Bolton, but have already given that game to Walton.

19) Jackson - A) Sheff Wed. Opened the scoring and was a real menace to Iorfa all game.

25) Luongo - H) Exeter. The second goal settled the nerves, we were back in the Championship.

27) Hirst - A) Barnsley. The second goal just before half time was just at the right time. I would have been happy seeing the last minute out, but George had a better idea.

29) Edwards - H) Cambridge. Two goals for Edwards, one flying in from out on the wing.

30) Humphries - A) Port Vale. Man of the Match display including a goal and an assist. Recognised by the Ipswich Supporters after the game, with a chorus of You're one of our own.

33) Broadhead - H) Port Vale. Two goals in a very tight game. The penalty had real pressure on it. Again could easily have been the free kick v Sheff Wed.

34) Clarke - Welcome back to the fist pump.

If you can think of any for the players I have missed out or want to state a different game for an individual player, feel free to share.

P.S. I was going to give Leigh the A)Barnsley for getting the game called off, but would then need to change Hirst.

It was a great season, where all of the players contributed.

Game Changed when we switched
at 16:18 9 Oct 2022

First 30 minutes was poor, with Morecambe having the best of the chances.

Personally at the time was thinking that McKenna had underestimated Morecambe and had made a mistake with how we had lined up.

McKenna saw that his initial set up was not working, and was brave enough to change that in the first half and from that moment on the game completely swung in our favour. Many previous Managers would have persevered through to half time at least.

For those that did not watch the game, Jackson started up top and other than a few runs down the channels could not get into the game - John-Jules moved into that role in that first half change and you can see that he is better playing with his back to goal.

Edwards moved from the "Burns" role to the left number 10 role and immediately started causing Morecambe problems, hit the post and also won the first penalty. He really is different to any of our other players in that role.

Jackson the last of the three changes moved to the right, replacing Edwards.

I like Jackson as a player, but in my opinion we do not function as well if he is playing the lone central role. We also lost our momentum when he moved into that role Away to Plymouth. I think there is definitely a place for Jackson in this squad, as either one of the 10's behind Ladapo or John-Jules OR as the Burns replacement at Right Wing Back.

All three moves created a positive, with John-Jules playing the central role better than Jackson, Edwards playing the left forward role better than John-Jules & Jackson being better than Edwards in the right wing back role.

In summary, really pleased with McKenna having the courage to change early in the game. Also if Ladapo doesn't start through the middle, I would definitely play John-Jules in that role ahead of Jackson.

After Match Thoughts
at 15:07 25 Sep 2022

Firstly, we seem to have a softness to us, when we concede a goal, rather than it inspiring us to up the game, we tend to get deeper.

Our substitutions / Their substitutions changed the game - Personally think we made a mistake by taking Ladapo off / putting Jackson through the middle - We were being forced to go long and Ladapo was winning a fair share in the air against Plymouth's defence, we just didn't have that outlet when Jackson went central.

Edmundson appears to be a little rusty still, think it is time for Keogh against Portsmouth, he may also give us a little more leadership on the pitch. Ball must also be close to playing next week.

Portsmouth is now a massive game, we need to bounce back.

Change of Formation required
at 07:54 8 Dec 2021

We are currently getting outnumbered in the central areas in nearly every game, with the top teams now playing a version of 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 depending on the wing backs capabilities.

When playing 4231, we have spare players wide (usually the full backs) who are not contributing enough to make the system work - the opposition however have two spare men centrally.

The two full backs are not doing enough offensively and also not necessarily helping enough defensively either.

I do think we have the players to go 352, and believe it would make us tougher to score against, as well as giving more support to the lone figure of Bonne.

Defensive three from Donacien, Edmundson, Burgess, Nsiala & Woolfenden
Wing backs from Burns, Coulson, Vincent-Young & Penney
Midfield three from Morsey, Carroll, Evans, Harper, El Mizouni & Celina
Front Two from Bonne, Chaplin & Pigott (possibly Jackson / Norwood)

My favoured 11 would be

Walton
Donacien, Edmundson, Burgess
Burns, Carroll. Morsey, Coulson
Celina
Chaplin & Bonne

But Vincent-Young or Penney could replace Coulson whilst injured

Also in tougher games like Wigan away potential to drop Celina for a Fraser / Harper or El Miz.

The only players not fitting the system would be Aluko & Edwards - but could work in a 343 and using a bit of width as a change option of the bench.

Woolfenden not in 18

I thought we had to have a home grown player in the 18, or only name 6 subs?

Does Bonne count as a home grown player? or have I read the rules wrong?

First Goal - So Important
at 14:23 28 Feb 2021

You hear a lot of commentators state that the first goal of a game is so important, and our results bear this out.

I did a quick bit of analysis on what our League results have been depending on whether we score the first goal or not.

We have scored the first goal in 15 of our League games this season so far, and have won 12, drawn 1 & lost 2 (The two defeats away to Doncaster & Peterborough). 80% win rate by scoring the first goal.

We have let in first in 11 league games, we have lost 8, drawn 1 and only won 2 (Plymouth Away & Shrewsbury Home) 18% win rate when we let in first. 72% lose rate when conceding the first goal.

Three games have ended 0-0.

Ipswich v Melbourne (Jim Magilton) game
at 11:36 28 Mar 2020

The Ipswich v Melbourne game earlier this week labelled the Jim Magilton game as he had been manager of both clubs, got me thinking as to whether as a collective we could name a game after an ex player /manager for every club?

Obviously we have Bobby Robson for Ipswich v Newcastle

Would you say Mick Mccarthy for Wolves V Ipswich (better than Venus?)

Let's see if we can get one for every league club.
