I think that Bakinson and Morsy are very similar types of players in that they are both typical box to box CM types. Morsy is stronger, both in the tackle and in possession, but Bakinson has the better pass and shot. I think on balance I would prefer to see Morsy hold and let a more dynamic CM drive, or pass, forward and take the odd pot shot for Jackson or a similarly fleet-footed striker to follow up any GK spills. Not sure that Evans is that type of player either, but I think he could be.

When Phil asked Ashton a question about recruitment for the Championship v League 1, a few weeks back, the answer was something like we will be recruiting the same standard of player regardless of which division we end up in. That answer seems slightly ridiculous to me, but I think he was trying to say that we will be recruiting for the Championship whilst still in League 1. The likes of Morsy, Burns, Walton, the back 3, Chaplin, Celina are arguably all proof of that already.

With regards to your last paragraph, I think that we can certainly recruit better quality strikers and LWBs than we presently have. I am absolutely confident of that.

I am not sure why anyone would ever take such a comment personally. It was an unfortunate mistake on his part, for which I don't ever recall him apologising.

Let's hope the new Ipswich TV commentator makes a better job of it.

Sorry, we're going round in circles a bit here. You replied to the post that expressed my opinion on BW. Here cut and pasted for you:

Opinion is split on him and has been for a long while. He is a good commentator, and certainly does his research before games.

I suspect that some of the negativity is due to people judging him when purely listening to the radio, while others have the benefit of watching the game on iFollow. I do the latter and am able to see when he clearly made a mistake or when his opinion of a player's performance differs from that of mine.

I personally never quite understood how he could be quite critical of the team during his commentaries, but give the manager such an easy ride in the post match interviews. Many fans get irked by his excitement for opposition attacks and goals. Lastly, I am not sure that he has always respected the Ipswich fans or as he once called them "the great unwashed".

There is nothing wrong with enjoying Brenner's commentary. However, there is nothing wrong with expressing valid criticisms either. He is a paid professional, as far as I know. He should be good, but many think he could and should be better.

Hope I haven`t misunderstood you, but you seem to be making all sorts of excuses for Brenner, but not for any "screaming novice"?

You are right about Phil's ban, but the general point that Phil got a hard time at pressers because he was the lone voice remains. Going back as far as the McCarthy era, where Phil was treated poorly because he asked the critical questions, whilst Brenner was also critical of McCarthy*s tactics etc. in his commentaries, but was almost servile post match and in pressers.

I understand that, but I think he simply bottled it. Maybe if Brenner, on behalf of Radio Suffolk and it's listeners, had asked a few pertinent questions when it mattered, Phil might not have seemed like a lone voice, allowing the club/Lambert to pick on him.

I agree with your last point. If Ipswich TV is to be successful, it would be helpful to have co-commentators like Millsy on board.

I must have had a different commentary feed to you. None of that happened to mine. The only criticisms I had was that there was no commentary at all for the first few minutes, and George Edmundson was not a great co-commentator (he is inexperienced, and is presumably only a stopgap anyway). It was a good debut performance from the commentator though, with few, if any, mistakes.

Best left back this season…
at 11:47 28 Apr 2022

That is a tough one. We played with a LB in a four under PC and then a LWB under KMc, so assuming you mean LB/LWB, I don't think any of that lot stood out as a future choice. If I had to trust one of them with the job, I'd have to go with Coulson for his potential, although he never really got going here.

However, I hope that Kyle Edwards can take on the job next year, as we need more of an attacking LWB than a defensive LWB, IMO. If he is not considered up to it, then we need to bring in an experienced LWB (not a LB), who can beat his man and consistently get a decent cross or shot away.

Bakinson
at 10:14 20 Apr 2022

I am in two minds about Bakinson. I don't know how much he would cost, and whether he really is, or could be, that much better than what we already have in El MIzouni, Harper, or even Humphries. Bakinson has many good attributes, and presumably would be 3rd choice, but there are also flaws, like the unnecessary free kicks and unforced errors. I wouldn't be too worried if we let him go.

Carroll certainly needs to go though, and Thompson. That ball across to Donacien and then backing off and allowing Power to cross for the 2nd goal shows how far away from a decent player he really is.

What was the comment from the Sky pundits yesterday
at 13:17 19 Apr 2022

Agreed, but I wasn't passing judgement on Norwood's playing abilities, more his interactions with refs and opponents approaching refs etc. There are maybe better examples than Norwood, but I was attempting to point out that if our other more capable players did a bit more appealing (in unison) for decisions, approaching/surrounding/complaining to the referee and ensuring that opponents aren't able to have a free ride at doing the same, we might gain more refereeing decisions in our favour.

Yep, there would be something quite funny about it, if indeed that is what I had said. I didn't though!

I wasn't saying we need more of Norwood's technical abilities, rather more of his nouse around referees and opponents. Him and Morsy are the only ones who seem to realise that you can play the ref a bit and also try to stop opponents doing the same.

I know what you mean. Teams/Players that stand off and let us play will have it far more difficult than those that are in our faces. The only players that are remotely equipped for that sort of battle are Morsy and Norwood.

However, I think defensively we are strong enough. With the addition of a good LWB and a good all round striker, who can shoot and has pace to threaten the ball over the top, we will be far more of a problem for opponents.

That recruitment is key, together with three key areas that we need to practice: shooting; some expertise set-piece training, both defensively and for attacks; and how to ensure that referees give decisions our way.

The latter point could even be covered by Norwood, teaching them all how to appeal loudly and in unison for everything, surrounding the referee and blocking opponents from doing the same. Not pretty, but with the standard of refereeing in this division it has to be done. Even Sir Bob used to give tips to his players on what sort of referee they could expect before games.

An Ipswich win. But ideally a goal each for Pigott and Jackson please

Is there any chance that you could start asserting that Ipswich have no chance of making the play-offs, winning the PO Final, getting promoted, that sort of thing?

It's all very tight now isn't it
at 09:18 13 Feb 2022

Can't see us catching MK or Sheff Wed, but I can imagine Sunlun and Wycombe continuing to slide, which means we probably need to win v Oxford and Plymouth to have a reasonable chance of finishing ahead of them.

We also need to at least maintain the same form as Bolton in future to keep them behind us.

It remains a really big ask, but looks more doable now than when KMc took over.
