Cook: We'll Probably Need 27, 28 or 29 Wins to Be Promoted
at 12:10:33

Would, as Cook says, 85 to 90 points do it for a top two place?

The current set-up of 24 teams and 3 points for a win began in the 1996/97 season. Since then, the stats for the top six teams are:

First place - Highest total 103, lowest 84, average 93.
Second - Highest 96, lowest 82.
Third - Highest 90, lowest 72, average 83.
Fourth - Highest 88, lowest 71, average 80.
Fifth - Highest 85, lowest 70, average 77.
Sixth - Highest 82, lowest 69, average 74.

But then, this is all lies, damned lies and statistics!

Records, as has been said, are there be broken. Who knows, we might finish top with a new record high of 103 points, or finish seventh with more than 82. Nothing in this world is guaranteed, especially for those who rely on sporting statistics.

I'll get my anorak.........

Bakay: European Super League Driven By Greed
at 21:30:09

At the risk of diverting this thread, I'll endorse Marinermagic's view of Celtic & Rangers.

If they were invited to play in England, which competition do they join, the Premiership, or the Football League? In both cases, they would do so at the expense of two English clubs. I think it is unlikely that they would accept anything less than the Premiership. They would not be guaranteed places in European club competitions (if such opportunities continue, so would not be able to recruit top players, then (as happens to almost all), they finish in the relegation places, where do they go? Down to the Championship, or back to Scotland, where they would have to start at the bottom. It simply doesn't stack up, unless both national associations were to merge across all divisions. Away days in Arbroath, anyone?

As far as the proposed Super League is concerned, I'm dead against it. It comes as no surprise, however, that the Americans who own Liverpool and Manure are involved. I hope fervently, though, that our new American owners are not so steeped in the non-competitive world of artificial American sport.

Portuguese Boss Claims Town Talks

"Unsworth has no experience and shouldn't be considered as manager."

A long time ago, Town appointed a manager who had been an England full back, then he did a bit of coaching, but, like Unsworth, when he came to us, had no prior management experience.

His name? Oh yes, Alf Ramsey.

In fact, if you consider that our three most successful managers have been Alf, Bobby Robson and George Burley, you will find that all three had minimal prior management experience.

This Might Rub You Up the Wrong Way, it Might Not!
at 13:50:44

I couldn't put it any better. The last game I attended was the home defeat by Rotherham the following month. I've just checked the Pride of Anglia report on that match, three interesting facts for you: the attendance on a cold march evening was over 20,000 (that's if attendance figures are to be believed); Liam Feeney made his loan debut at half time, started tearing Rotherham apart from the right wing, then was switched to the left wing & virtually disappeared (guess who he plays for now); the opposition manager was Neil Warnock.

I'm just hoping that Cardiff don't do a similar job on us tonight.

That Rotherham match wasn't the first under McCarthy which I left feeling utterly deflated by the poor quality football (let alone the result), but I knew that enough was enough. I know that others spend more time and money following Town than I do, but we all make choices in our lives. I resolved then stay away until McCarthy has gone. Let's hope there'e no more than another 14 matches to go, maybe fewer.

Everything About Us Screams Mid-Table, Doesn’t It? - Notes for Sheffield Wednesday

Crikey, Harry, are you sure you're not reviewing us?

“We have a strong squad with more than enough options, but it is under-utilised because our tactics never change”, “We're not quick enough with or without the ball to open teams up”, “At times we look brilliant when we pull off something special, but we often make mistakes doing simple things.”

Samuel and Patterson Both Net Hat-Tricks as U23s Hammer Watford

Dugoutdave - thanks for the link to the Watford report, reads as if it was written with sour grape ink. Our line up is described as having a wealth of first team experience, but 8 out of the 14 players used have never appeared in our first eleven, 4 of the other six have not more than a dozen appearances between them.

Mick McCarthy: Shrewd Pragmatist or Tactical Dinosaur?
at 19:03:38

Whatever the merits, or otherwise, of the long ball game, I remain to be convinced that McCarthy will ever again embrace an attacking philosophy to replace his inherent conservatism. It has been said many times now that he saved us from relegation and that we should forgive his enduring pragmatism because of this. I disagree.

I believe that the start of my disillusionment can be dated to the drawn Blackburn game in October 2014. We were ahead to a 65th minute McGoldrick goal, scored directly from the free kick awarded for a foul for which Kilgallon received a second yellow card. They weren't that impressive anyway, so here was the opportunity to put their 10 men under pressure and record a good win. On the bench was Darren Ambrose, one of the most talented (in my view, anyway) goal-scoring midfielders produced at the club this century, having said when he rejoined that he had a point to prove. Here was the chance for him to make the most of opponents on the back foot.

What did McCarthy do? He replaced Jonathan Williams with Jay Tabb. To paraphrase the author, this handed the initiative to our opponents and, sure enough, when Berra committed one of his trademark fouls on the edge of the area, Blackburn equalised on 90 minutes. What should have been a relatively easy win was turned into an embarrassment.

I am not embarrassed to admit it, but I haven't been to Portman Road since the Rotherham defeat last season, which was an even worse embarrassment. You might be tempted to accuse me of disloyalty, but I refute any such accusations, after all, I've been following Town, and will continue to do so, since 1960. I cannot justify the time and expense of attending home matches from here in Kent, under the present management. McCarthy's public pronouncements, particularly the derogatory remarks about us fans, makes it worse. After all, we will be following Town long after he has gone. A modern professional football club is nothing without fans.

Keeping It in Perspective
at 12:44:49

Food for thought, but as much as it pains me to say this, all of your comparison clubs have the potential to become permanent members of the top tier, but I'm not sure the same can be said of us. They have vastly superior potential fan bases, being based in major population centres, and a greater depth of history in the game. In the case of all but Derby they have better trophy collections, albeit somewhat historic, but then ours is looking like that now.

These clubs might be defined as sleeping giants who have fallen on hard times, definitely punching below their weight. I would add Pompey to the list, possibly Sheffield Utd as well, with Newcastle and Villa as possible additions, depending on their ability to get out of the Championship sooner rather than later.

I'm sure other posters will disagree, please let us know!

This Season Can’t End Soon Enough - Notes for Fulham
at 13:10:03

"Tim Ream is more of a solid rather than attacking option at left-back.” The 28-year-old ex-Bolton man “struggled against Birmingham, a little flat-footed at times and he got turned inside-out by a couple of their players. He was a centre-back playing out of position and looked uncomfortable.”

“Ream gave Knockaert too much space against Brighton, often being too high up the field”, “He gets caught out of position far too often”, “We have major problems in our full-back positions and using Ream and Stearman has been Jokanovic's last throw of the dice to plug the holes in our defence.”

Looks like we should have Feeney on the right wing to take on his ex-Bolton colleague and Pringle on the other side against Stearman.
