I’ve been concerned about the recruitment policy all summer but having failed to beat two teams that were in league one last season and one who is currently in league two... and looked goal shy having lost pretty much all of last years goals via Waghorn, Garner, Celina and McGoldrick... I think we may as well face facts that unless the way they are being asked to play is so complicated they can’t get it quickly but when they do it’s genius... we are in for a very long hard season. I think it’s worth giving it a month but at the moment we’ve gone from a top half championship team to looking like a league one team out of its depth. I’m not suggesting a change of manager in a month btw but we need to face facts... lots of teams bring in a new manager and they say all the right things.... right up until a player says they are to blame for his sacking
So hard to predict given we have 4 new players to choose from since the first game( Ward being available).
The back 5 seems obvious but apart from perhaps Edwards there are 5 spots you can’t be sure of. This is more what I predict than what I would pick as I would have Ward in the side and leave Nolan on the bench....although Nolan coming in also is going to limit Dozzell, Nydam and Downes time on the pitch, especially when Huws, Bishop and Adeyemi( not sure if we should just release him) get fit Bart Donacien Chambers Nsiala Knudsen Skuse Chalobah Nolan Edwards Harrison Sears
Those who moaned about sears being used wide under MM look like being able to continue to moan this season.
Looking at his record he’s not a player I’d be after but even £1.5m for someone who’s goals record is pretty poor and who’s been at championship level before and done nothing is ridiculous. Can anyone offer any insight into why he might be commanding such fees? There isn’t much of a highlights reel online. Even at Grimsby where I assume PH worked with him he scored 1 goal in 20 appearances.
So we’ve signed several lower league players who have knocked around the non league, league one and league two scene. It seems we may be signing at least 3 more with the Shrewsbury pair and Jackson. Of course it’s nice to think these are all Gems who are going to move the club forward... but we are not the first club to sign such players and find out hungry or not there is a reason they’ve got to their mid twenties and not played at this level. I’m hoping PH has some insight that other managers don’t have... maybe even knowing simply which players will make his system work? However there is also usually a good reason players who have performed at this level well cost more... the odds are they will continue to perform well at this level. My concern is the number of unproven championship players we are signing could leave us fighting relegation with a squad of players made up of kids with little experience full stop and players who aren’t good enough. This is a risky strategy.... it may pay off massively or see us eyeing league one in 9montns time. Having said all that I’m simply stating a concern rather than a prediction and will hope we have come across the genius plan needed to move us forward.
