Interesting update about Whittaker
at 18:20 2 Jan 2023

Russell Martin says he expects to learn more ‘tonight or tomorrow’ about whether Whittaker is going to be recalled, which suggests it isn’t being handled by him?

Palace looking to loan Plange out, will we go in for him? Scored a hat trick against us in pre season.

Phil, a lot about Celina on twitter? Any news?

I was wondering the same! Someone told me today that we agreed a fee with Dijon for him last week. But, I will believe it when I see it.

Yeah that's true, but we are going to be recruiting like a Championship club so that's why I think we may attempt to bring him in. We probably won't get him, as he will have Championship interest, but I can see him being one on the shortlist.

Summer Transfer Guesses
at 12:44 2 May 2022

If I was given £1 to put on a player that Ipswich were going to attempt to bring in this summer, it would be ..........

Luke Plange on loan from Crystal Palace. Plange was brought by Palace in January from Derby for £1 million, and then sent back out on loan to Derby where he has scored 4 goals, whilst also getting 2 assists in his 19 starts and 6 substitute appearances. These numbers are decent considering this is his first season in professional football and of course the off the field problems at Derby.

Reasons why I think Ipswich will be after him:

He fits the bill of who McKenna said he likes to work with, "young, hungry, technical and athletic players". We also know McKenna likes quick strikers who can run in behind teams.

When Rooney was asked about Plange's strengths he said "He can run in behind teams, he’s quick and he is also strong enough to hold the ball up", he also described him as a "clever player". Which furthers the evidence that he is the type of player McKenna and Ipswich will be looking at.

Anyone else got any guesses?

Burgess is a half-decent League One centre-back. Edmundson is a top League One centre-back with the potential to play Premier League football IMO.

You see Oxford’s equaliser? Where Burgess was fast asleep?

Yes, Edmundson gets straight back in for me, Burgess has done well but nowhere near the level of Edmundson.

I had heard a while back that Dyer was not happy, it was around the time Cook got sacked as I think they got on very well and Dyer felt Cook needed more time. He also wasn’t happy with things behind the scenes and even though Ashton says it’s a “surprise”, it isn’t as Dyer requested to leave earlier in the season.

What do we reckon tomorrow?
at 21:39 30 Jan 2022

I’m going for -

Out: Coulson (loan terminated), Harper (loan), Nolan (mutually terminated), Fraser (sold) and potentially Pigott (a team could panic and pay over the odds).

In: A new CM and a new ST

Aluko, Chaplin or Celina?

Yeah I agree, at the moment it’s Aluko’s shirt. Just can’t wait to see what Celina will be like in this system.

Aluko, Chaplin or Celina?

They are all very good players at this level. I think most fans would have wrote Aluko off when he signed, but he has been very good and proved lots of us wrong. Having said that, I just find Celina so exciting to watch, he has real quality and could thrive under a manager like McKenna.

Aluko, Chaplin or Celina?
at 14:02 9 Jan 2022

Having these three as options for the number 10 position is frankly ridiculous for a League One club. However, who is the best option? As good as Aluko has been, his goal and assist output is lower than both Chaplin’s and Celina’s. But, it seems the team performs better when Aluko starts!

*All stats based on League One games and according to whoscored.com

Points per game when they have started (League Games):
Aluko — 10 starts — 1.7 PPG
Chaplin — 10 starts — 1.5 PPG
Celina — 9 starts — 1.55 PPG

Goals:
Aluko — 3 (in 16)
Chaplin — 5 (in 18)
Celina — 4 (in 13)

Assists:
Aluko — 0 (in 16)
Chaplin — 2 (in 18)
Celina — 3 (in 13)

Key passes per game:
Aluko — 0.5 PG
Chaplin — 0.6 PG
Celina — 1.5 PG

They all offer different things! Celina offers outrageous flair and skill, with real creativity at times. Chaplin is a goalscorer & a championship level footballer. Whilst Aluko works so hard for the team and glides past players with ease, he can look class at times.

For the foreseeable future you have to stick with Aluko due to his excellent last few performances. However, there is a part of me that would love to see Celina start in the number 10 role. Reading McKenna’s comments about Celina (“He’s someone we are really looking forward to working with” “He is a big talent” “I’m fully aware of what he can do and what he can bring to the team”), it is hard not to imagine how good he could look in this team under McKenna. The stats suggest he is the best all-round number 10 we have and I can’t wait to see him unleashed again!

When I first read this, I laughed, thought to myself no chance, who is this bloke?

However, after doing some research he actually has a very good background in coaching. At 27 years old, he became head of education at Birmingham City (as well as coach of the U16 & U17). He then moved onto a job working for the Premier League as a coaching advisor. He then moved onto West Ham as an assistant academy director. Although, at this point he did have an investigation made which meant he moved on from The Hammers, so that’s a bit of a red flag.

He then went to the Johan Cruyff institute in Amsterdam, to gain a masters in coaching, not to dissimilar to a certain Graham Potter. He then moved into professional football as an assistant manager for Aldershot in 2016, where he and Gary Waddock gained two successive play-off spots. After leaving Aldershot in 2019, he went onto manage Gloucester City where he guided them to the top of the National League North before being poached by Chesterfield in 2020. When he joined Chesterfield they were in the relegation zone, he took them on an incredible run and got them into the play-offs where they lost to Notts County. This season Chesterfield sit 1st in the National League, where he currently has a 61.4% win rate.

So, after all that could this man actually be a candidate? Definitely more inspiring then most being linked.

Update on the points required to be in the play-offs by Boxing Day thread
at 10:41 24 Nov 2021

We now need to win the next 5…

What's required for Ipswich to be 6th by Boxing Day? by PattiswickBlue 5 Oct 2021 16:11
Gameweek 24 stats — (Boxing Day)

20/21 after 24 games 6th — 40 points
19/20 after 24 games 6th — 37 points
18/19 after 24 games 6th — 41 points
17/18 after 24 games 6th — 39 points
16/17 after 24 games 6th — 38 points
15/16 after 24 games 6th — 40 points

Average points haul for 6th position over the past six seasons, after 24 games is — 39 points. Therefore, Ipswich need to amass 29 points from 14 games, to reach Mark Ashton and Mike O’Leary’s aim of “being in and around it at Christmas time”. An example of a way that Ipswich could do that is by winning 9, drawing 2 and losing 3 games. To achieve these 9 wins it means Ipswich will have to beat sides like Sunderland, Wigan, Wycombe and Portsmouth all away from home. The next 14 games:

Shrewsbury (H), Cambridge (A), Portsmouth (A), Fleetwood (H), Plymouth (A), Wycombe (A), Oxford (H), Sunderland (A), Rotherham (H), Crewe (H), Charlton (A), Wigan (A), Sunderland (H) and Gillingham (A).

It requires one hell of a run against the league’s best sides, I am a big fan of Cook but he has made this incredibly difficult for himself. However, you could see this as an opportunity to beat the best sides and stamp our authority on the league. It starts with Shrewsbury at home on Saturday, which is an absolute MUST WIN game.
