If he's going to play four at the back then really need three in midfield and play with two 10s. But we've not recruited with that in mind and most of the midfielders we do have are made of glass so not going to happen. Meaning the alternate is a 5 which leaves us too deep and inviting pressure.
Also notable that no one has really replicated the unique Luongo inside-left-deep-midfield role which helped give the cover / license for Leif to bomb on so much last year. |

Wouldn't necessarily feel like it, but 3rd bottom ahead of the other two promoted teams would be a massive achievement with this group given everyone else is in at least 3rd consecutive season in the league and Leicester and Southampton having bounced back. Obvs hoping for at least one place higher. |

I think Man City game will suit this system better as they park their defensive line on halfway and leave space in behind. That narrows the gap from back to front so easier to get up in support and means if Delap gets a ball in the channel and turns his man he's got an angle to drive at the box. Much like with Chelsea
Brighton seemed to play more of a mid block so bigger gaps left Delap isolated and also meant when he pulled wider he was driving towards the side of the box / into no man's land.
Brighton game was prob least suited to this system in block of 6 games (excluding Bristol R) from Arsenal to Liverpool but made sense to stick with it from a consistency POV if nothing else. Wouldn't be over-surprised if we see an additional 10 for at least some of the following run given fixtures and players coming back. [Post edited 18 Jan 12:38]

Looking at BlueBoots thread, we'd have two less spaces in our 25-man squad next season as Delap and Hutchinson will no longer qualify as u21s*.
Doak and any other permanent targets this window could be partly influenced by this?

The whole play from kick-off is on Newcastle's YT highlights. Saw it live and watching it back there are two key points for me.
First, Anthony Gordon tracks back from kick-off which narrows the angle / space Chaplin has to play into which results in him rushing or overhitting the pass. Maybe they planned the routine expecting him to stay on halfway which would leave Omari one on one with Lewis Hall and an overload at the far post.
Second, as you've said. Having lost possession, when Schar plays the upfield pass, Hutchinson and Burns are crossing back in the central third rather than pressing. Should probably have held position on the 'wrong' side until we were back in possession or ball went dead for a guaranteed period of time e.g. goal kick. [Post edited 24 Dec 2024 16:22]

Returns from the players' families seem to go up about 90mins before kick off. SAR upper near the tunnel. Don't expect many for Xmas games or City but were prob 20+ there when we were walking to the ground for Bournemouth [Post edited 16 Dec 2024 21:37]

Club needs some slightly cuter software to make sure you're eligible before starting the purchase. There were a clearly a lot of seats being held in baskets then released. Bought 3 individual tickets in same block to make sure we didn't miss out and, by keeping an eye on releases and a call to ticket office are now all together. |
