Boring stat of the week.
Assuming there are no more debutants this season - I can't imagine any previously unused youngsters will burst onto the scene and be trusted enough to play a part in the run-in - this will be the season with the fewest debutants (9) since 2007/08.
Obviously, our non-involvement in the Pizza Cup reduces the debut opportunities for young players who are never going to get a game in the more serious competitions, but even so 9 is a big reduction on the average of 17 per season since 2008 (with a high of 25(!) in 2012/13).
That suggests a good level of continuity, which I think is a good thing. A huge turnover of players never seems to have a positive effect. There have been no debutants from the academy this season, which is a bit of a shame but not particularly unusual. At least Buabo has had a bit of involvement.

Yesterday was the first time since 2002 that our opening-day starting XI did not include a player making his debut. I think.
Circumstances in 2002 made it difficult to buy new players, of course, which perhaps explains why that year was an exception. Prior to that, you have to go back to 1994, when we had to wait a little longer for Adrian Paz to turn up and take the Premier League by storm.

Anyone watching this? Haven’t seen tonight’s but in previous episodes there’s been a lot of fuss about the date 21-2-98. No doubt it’s hugely significant for some reason or other, but whenever it gets mentioned, all I can think is that that’s when we beat Norwich 5-0. Great day. |

Wonder what it'll be? The black shorts of the 2nd and 3rd kits clash with Wednesday's. Will the ref overlook the shorts clash (as they seem to be doing more frequently this season), will we have some bespoke shorts or another surprise option, or will it be a horrible mash-up using the home shorts - who remembers the criminal orange-and-black-shirt-with-white-and-blue -swirly-shorts combination once seen at Hillsborough?
These are the really important questions, I'm sure you'll agree. |
