Town Draw Oldham at Home in FA Cup
Time to just concentrate on the Cup - ‘cos, let’s face it, anything from the league is becoming a rapidly fading dream! Groundhog manager, groundhog team……. But recognise I should resist becoming over optimistic😜
Coulson and Walton Closing in on Returns, Aluko Back But Setback for Nolan
Great that players are well on the way back - although, in some (good) respects adds to PC’s dilemma as to who constitutes his best starting line up!
Not sure, however, what to make of his comments regarding Jon Nolan. Obviously wish him a speedy recovery, but thought there was an ominous tinge to PC’s comments. Watch and shoot…..
Morsy: We Let Ourselves Down
Blaming the opposition for being more tactically astute, working harder and wanting to win more than we did, and comparing them to a non-league club, gives the answer to the question WHY!
Am seriously starting to question whether this ‘project’ is a step too far for PC. Emotion apart, his record since being appointed is poor; for every pace forward, we almost inevitably take two back. No amount of words and cliches have been able to rectify what is a major fault line.
Cook: An Absolutely Shocking Performance
Our inability to overcome big, physically aggressive, teams has plagued us for a long time. I thought Sam Morsy’s post match comments were illuminating. He seemed to suggest that it was the way that AS set up and played was the reason for our abysmal inability to play the way we wanted! I couldn’t quite believe what I was hearing; but perhaps it goes some way to explain why we failed to match them in just about every area. They didn’t play honestly……….defies belief, but explains a lot about mental approach.
One thing for sure, however, is that repeats for the remainder of the season will only end in one outcome. The whole kit and caboodle at PR needs to accept the realities of L1 football, and ensure we’re able to lower our game to that level, when necessary!
Fans Offered Chance to Have Name on Beattie Statue Plinth
No! Thoroughly bad idea, bad taste, crass judgement. Recognise the need to preserve the integrity of what prompted the original idea, and do not dilute or detract from it by seeking to make additional money from a spurious and devisive scheme.
Ipswich Town 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday - Match Report
Grateful for the late - albeit fortuitous - point. But, for me, more to be concerned about than to be positive about. Not sure whether it’s the players, or the manager/coaching staff; but today’s performance was probably somewhere between Mick Mills’ somewhat critical, downbeat, summary, and PC’s clearly OTT post match comments. Lots more work required.
Cook: Delighted, Now Let's Make Sure We Follow It Up
There’s no doubt that PC and his support team are sparing no effort to turn a bunch of strangers into a credible and effective team. From his post-match comments, set within the sad loss of his father, today’s win represented a huge psychological hurdle that’s been jumped. Despite his chirpy, Scouse, front, he must have harboured some self doubts. He’ll deserve to feel good about himself, but - as ever in football - know that it’s the next game that’s most important. But the confidence and belief to be taken from today, should make facing Sheff Wed that much easier.
Well done to PC, the whole team and the fantastic travelling support. Enjoy the moment and……COYB!
Burns: We Can Still Win the League
The risk the owners have to assess is: do we retain confidence in PC’s ability to achieve the goals he’s been set relative to our investment; or must we conclude that, sadly, the job’s too big for him. If the former, then patience is the most important factor. If the latter, then is there a high quality, proven, alternative prepared to come in (and possibly risk career/reputation in doing so?
By no means easy. Bringing a new manager, coaching staff and other back room staff causes massive disruption, with no guarantee of a better outcome. But, if it ends up being inevitable, based upon continuing poor results, then better it be done sooner rather than later - giving us a fighting chance of getting something out of this season. Or, stick with PC and accept that this season might turn out to be one of slow build, trial and error and a degree of supporters’ frustration and loss of belief.
Cook: One of the Toughest Days I've Had in Management
Would hope that Ashton has spoken with PC and made it crystal clear that what we witnessed yesterday was totally unacceptable - from both the players’, and he and his coaching team’s perspective. Stand back from the emotion, expectations and torrent of words that tumble haphazardly from PC’s mouth, and ensure that he understands that any repeat of that abject display will result in his removal. No room for sentiment and excuses that appear to be covering up some fundamental shortcomings.
Penney: The Game Should Have Been Done at Half-Time
He’s stating the blindingly obvious - and is a continuation of what’s gone before. Big difference, however, is that we now possess the quality ‘weapons’ to create, threaten and score. But we need to become a complete team; physically and mentally strong in all areas. That’s PC’s immediate challenge.
Once he does - and I really hope he can - we’re going to be a major force in this division. Players, too, need to get better at making better decisions, being stronger and responding to oppositions’ strengths - not be intimidated or lose confidence and belief.
Cook: Disappointing, We'd Managed Their Threat
But they managed our threat better, and won.
Yes, there are signs of improvement; but errors in concentration, leadership and on field judgements are costing us in games of fine margins. And there’s the challenge - to have any realistic chance of promotion, we have to become good enough to avoid becoming victims of ‘fine margin’ games. A challenge - notwithstanding money, new players, management etc - that remains exactly that - a huge task. And time is no friend!
Cook: Burton Play a Certain Style and They're Effective at It
Central defence is a real concern, and something that requires fixing ASAP.
Suggest, however, that PC forgets about ‘expectation management’, and devotes all his concentration on coaching to win football matches. Every team in this league will present a stern challenge, upping their games and making life difficult. We have to be mentally and physically tough. Winning is the habit we need to acquire.
Blues Close in on Evans Signing
No complaints! Get it over the line, and give him a warm welcome!
Amazing how, following years of living in a dark place where the most modest of signings seemed well beyond us, a great shaft of light is beaming down. Agree that it’s still very early days, but by heck everything seems a whole lot more positive looking forward. COYB!
