Fantastic initiatives at what is a unique time. Important though football is to us all, sometimes life intervenes and helps us all refocus. People are what really matter, and a willingness to help those who might need a little support is the mark of a compassionate supporter, able to rise above the superficial and banal.

EFL Issue Update Following Meeting
at 09:45:42

Getting the financial support in place, and quickly, is critical to some clubs’ survival. Should they not be supported, and potentially go under, then completing this season’s fixtures will become academic.

The whole footballing community, from top to bottom, needs to get onto the same page - sound leadership required to ensure it does!

Lambert: We Could Struggle to Keep Downes in the Summer
at 13:45:15

Important as the FD issue is, I think there needs to be a root and branch, top-down, review to resolve the on and off field shambles our club has progressively descended into. Ideally it should be conducted by a non-partisan, independent, individual with a proven footballing track-record - otherwise it’s likely to be reheating past failures. Not holding my breath on that one, though!

Would hope, however, that FD would want to continue his development with us, for one more season. Everyone else can go!😷

Judge Out for the Rest of the Season
at 18:21:35

Feel for him, on a personal level, given his injury woes in the past. Might be suggested that he’s never quite recaptured the consistent form we had all anticipated. Can’t criticise his work rate, but much of it with limited creative impact. Nevertheless wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Football being an unsentimental sport, one man’s injury is another’s opportunity. Dobra, for example.

Skuse: Performance Showed We’ve Not Thrown in the Towel
at 15:42:43

The received wisdom following our relegation: strong squad, top end League 1 wage bill, strong supporter base, experienced manager, our overall quality and power will cause other L1 teams significant problem etc etc, was largely bought into by most of us. Warming initially to PL’s astute media offensive, ST sales held up and average attendances were exceptional, given our demise.

However, whilst early season results were positive, the same couldn’t be said about our ability to put in consistently convincing performances. For some, watching on, alarm bells started to ring, albeit faintly, following the away defeat at A Stanley. Today, we need industrial standard ear protection to drown them out. PL wearing Emperor’s New Clothes, ME’s non-laying investment chickens coming home to roost. Players now clutching at non-existent straws, rather than admitting to the harshest of truths: the multiple factors that led to our relegation were far more toxic and deep-rooted, affecting all areas within the club; but, principally, the serious lack of first team quality. Results, tables and performances ultimately don’t lie. In truth, we’re probably a League 2 club, that over-achieved in those first games of the season. So let C Skuse and others try to hold up hard working defeats as signs of improvement, whilst clinging to a never say die attitude, as the benchmark for remaining games. At least we know what to expect: don’t expect too much from us against well organised, good footballing teams - and we’ll be working extra hard not to disappoint.

A brilliant attempt at trying to divert attention away from slightly more serious issues! But, hey ho, nice to know that in the weird and wonderful world that is PR, life just carries on as normal.🤪

Warnock Linked Again But No Contact With Town
at 17:06:07

Whether there’s any mileage in the Warnock story - time will tell.

But whether it’s Warnock or A N Other, the resources at their disposal - responsible for getting us where we are - will remain the same, with insufficient time available to assess individuals and implement the fundamental changes needed post PL to refloat a rapidly sinking ship. That option has, realistically, gone. True PL’s departure will placate some, and a new face will reignite hope. But the challenge now awaiting any PL replacement is massive. My inclination would be to stick it out with PL and regroup in the summer, having spent the intervening time identifying potential replacements. However, sadly, ME’s past recruitment and decision making record leaves me with little confidence that he’ll get it right. Ideally we should be hoping for a far more significant change at the top of our beloved, but currently very poorly, club.

Ipswich Town 0-1 Fleetwood Town - Match Report
at 22:08:41

Beyond anger, beyond frustration, beyond hope. Everything about the ownership and management of our club is toxic. The players/team don’t set out to deliberately under-perform, but although not quite lions, they’re clearly led by very sick donkeys.

Really no point in booting out PL at this stage - wait for summer. Although given ME’s decision making track record over his tenure, I doubt he will get it right. Struggling to see the way forward.

Lambert: Fleetwood is a Must-Win Game
at 17:35:45

He’s right. Total focus, commitment and determination required from those wearing the shirts to make it happen. Win individual battles, be brave, win every second ball, make the right decisions, cut out stupid, individual, errors and get the footballing basics right. Do all of those things, and we have a chance. COYB!

Lambert: That Was a Sore One
at 22:32:39

PL = Emperor’s New Clothes. More of us now realising that beneath the elaborate PR spiel there exists a very naked football coach/manager.

Note that in his post match interview he seemed to be standing, detached, from the team. Talking in terms of ‘you’ and ‘them’, rather than ‘we’ and ‘us’. Small point, perhaps, but one that perhaps highlights the dressing room relationship.

Lambert: That Was a Sore One

Basically saying, ‘it’s not me, it’s the players’. They work hard, do their best - and I do my best to get the best out of them. That’s all ME can ask of me, relative to the resources he’s prepared to fund. Five years, though, we should be bucking for promotion, back to League 1.

So, that’s all right then!

Town Down to Ninth
at 09:59:50

Depressing. More so, however, are real concerns regarding our chances of finding enough within the team to secure a playoff place. Automatic promotion is, frankly, beyond us.

Inconsistency, individual and collective mistakes, questionable tactics and possible lack of mental toughness are all potential negatives, that the bare statistics of our current abysmal run sadly support. But, whilst there’s life there’s hope, and that’s what we need to stick with, until even that disappears. COYB!

Oh dear, another blue-clad talking head sent in to bat for the cause! Sadly, however, methinks he’s got his ‘A’s’ confused: ability and ambition! Sunderland 1-0 Ipswich Town - Match Report
at 20:58:30

We can pick over individual results and performances; we can review past and present managers’ achievements. Opinions will inevitably be diverse, possibly extreme, but ultimately subjective. That’s what passionate supporters are about.

However, what isn’t subjective, and what underpins everything about the club both on and off field, is the inexorable demise that has occurred under ME’s stewardship. Today we apparently set another unwanted statistic, having lost 3 successive games at this lowly level. A lot of football related matters are subjective. Others are unarguable.

Garbutt and Bishop Out But Huws Fit For Sunderland Trip
at 21:18:50

Disappointing for Bish, copping with yet another injury and inevitably attracting adverse criticism from some. No doubt, when fully fit, he’s a class above; however, putting sentiment aside, there’s no doubt that his injury record is not good. The club is going to have to make a dispassionate decision when his contract comes onto the renewal radar screen.

The conclusion might be that, although a quality player, his body is just not up to the relentless rigours of pro football. That would be incredibly sad, but the evidence does not stack up in his favour. What’s needed is for him to recover full fitness, then remain fit and play consistently over a number of games. In these tough financial times, the club can not afford to employ an injury prone individual against the hope that he might eventually come good.
