A very good post which adds a lot to our appreciation of Ipswich and the mman who did so much to mould us. Like so many of the stories the case of vintage port has different versions. I had always understood it went to Man Utd's chairman as Capt. Ivan's early version of compensation, and that the contract he pushed across a Manchester restaurant table was enough for SD to sign. I even heard that the two drove straight to Suffolk and Capt. Ivan sent two telegrams from Lt. Glemham post office the follwoinng morning. One to his wine merchant and the other to Utd's chairman which read: 'Got your manager but there's a case of vintage port on its way to you.' Now what days were those? |

Funny using George Best as an example. He never played in an international tournament because with a couple of exceptions, the players around him weren't good enough, and NI is only a small association. It's the world class players who miss out. For Giggs read Best. Dalglish might struggle today. if we had a GB&NI team and single association through all those decades, would it still be only one World Cup? As I recall Gibraltar's recognition by FIFA and a gleeful Blatter came just after Great Britain had the temerity to field a men's football team in the London Olympics. Scotland and Gareth Bale didn't take part! It's divide and rule and we lap it up. We've been had. |
| News Comment | McKenna: Nothing Imminent But Work Continues at 19:24:54
Anyone who thinks we are suddenly going to start paying way more than we have already paid, and if we don't we will sit in the middle of the Championship forever, simply doesn't understand the way our club is run. They can include agents and selling clubs besides some on here. We are now a very good club, very well run, and above all we have a well-worked plan that will be stuck to. |

He actually said "two or three at least" in an interview in Innsbruck and so that is probably a strong indication that one or two (or more) haven't materialised. It's ironic, isn't it? The one time in our club's history when there hasn't been a financial constraint internally, the ante is upped, again. It simply puts more of an onus on the coaching, the know-how, the smooth running of the club that we all enjoy today, and the near-certain knowledge that the journey will continue to be fruitful. The B's Brighton, Bournemouth, Burnley and Brentford are proving that you don't need kazillions or oilfields, it is as much about technique and application. For now, at least. |
| News Comment | Town Release Shirt Numbers at 17:52:34
Meaning one more of that squad apart from Hayes will need to be loaned or released (or train with the U21s?) if two more signings come in - assuming none of the new signings count as U21s. But Ashton said 'two to three at least'. So it could be two, three or even four! of that list do not feature. |
| News Comment | McKenna: Some Really Good Stuff and I Enjoyed the Game at 23:47:36
How many Championship teams have prepared for the season as well as Ipswich? Doesn't guarantee success, but does make it more possible. We can only speculate how well equipped we already might be, it'll become clear after about three months, maybe even earlier! Injury upon injury is a guarantee of a very tough season, so let's hope it's not going to be like that. |

If Pigott leaves and Baggott and Hayes go out on loan as is the announced intention, that will reduce our squad to 23 out of a maximum 25 (plus underage players Humphreys and Slicker). So on that basis it is going to be two out of a desired three: Winger/wide man; Centre back; striker. We really need all three but can't have them unless another player is sold, released or loaned, or we sign an underage player. That said, Ladapo just goes about his business and can alternate with Hirst, but if one is injured or horribly out of form, we suffer. We had an injury problem in the centre midfield last season that's unlikely to be repeated, so otherwise we are overloaded there. |

| News Comment | Ashton: I'm Fortunate to Have Really Smart Owners at 14:48:12
He is probably also thinking about Sheffield Wednesday, given the latest chapter in their upheaval, among several others Much more of a hands-on owner there, and a promotion-winning manager departed. We deserve to have what we have now, getting practically everything right, good consistent finance and owners, having suffered for far too long. |
| News Comment | Head of Sports Science Costin Leaves Town at 20:39:21
To be fair we don't know and don't need to know the circumstances. He gets to oversee the whole performance space with a USL club. We wish Andy and his family well for the immediate and long-term future, and in particular thank him and try to quantify the huge influence he has had in the revival of our great club. |
| News Comment | McKenna: No Upper Limit On What Can Be Achieved at Town at 10:32:54
He's right. The club realises (and I think the ownership realised while they were trying to buy it) that in the past there was always a financial constraint on our success and the club staff did the best they could. Not anymore. |
