Thanks all, lots in there that makes sense. Let’s hope he’s as brilliant as we’d like him to be!

Matusiwa fee
at 22:10 13 Jul 2025

I like the sound of Azor Matusiwa, based predominantly on our history of Dutch players and a love of holding midfielders.

Question though - if the undisclosed fee is (as reported) €9m, why have we got him for less than Rennes paid for him (reportedly) in January 2024? That figure is quoted as somewhere between €13m and €15m. I don’t understand why they’d accept less when he was just over one year into a four-year contract.

Is it simply the player’s desire to play in England?

No agenda with this question by the way, just confused.

A Town XI that never was…

Fair. They were bought in the hope of producing the kind of record he went on to produce.

With these additions we're beginning to have the makings of two XIs. All perfectly Ipswichy players at one point or another.

A Town XI that never was…
at 09:20 19 Nov 2024

Inspired by a podcast I’ve heard from Palace fans. An XI of players who somehow never played for Town, but it really feels like they did or very much could have had things gone differently.

**

GK: Joe Lewis - From Bury, played for Posh, very promising at one time. The perfect fit for a 2012 move to PR.

RB: Greg Halford - A talented, young Colchester player. How did he never move here?!

CB: Paddy McCarthy - Had to check he didn’t play for us under Jewell.

CB: Richard Wood - Ditto. Still not sure he didn’t play next to Danny Higginbotham and/or Neill Collins.

LB: George Friend - Maybe we went for Stephen Ward instead…

RM: Gareth McLeary - “Tabb, finds Skuse, he plays it to McLeary…”

CM: Kenny Lunt - I loved the Crewe team he was in. Rivers, Ashton etc. We always seemed to beat them approx 4-3. I feel like around the 2000-2004 era we were very good at picking up the best players at less good clubs, but maybe we just took Jamma instead.

CM: Graeme Dorrans - Obviously the Norwich connection comes into play but feels very us at one time or another, maybe it could have been us instead of Albion when he moved down to England.

LM: Stephen Quinn - Possibly because of his brother but I really feel like this has happened.

CF: Craig Mackail-Smith - The Posh thing again. Good player for them, very Jewell.

CF: Billy Sharp - Scored a lot of goals in Championship while we were there. Had that nice moment at PR for Doncaster where we clapped him. Would have been a Chopra or Priskin type signing.

Manager - Warnock. I think we’d have had a lot of fun.

In forming this I did feel slightly scarred by Jewell and McCarthy, but there’s a touch of Burley/Royle/Magilton in there too.

Something I noticed in his pre-match interview, he used “we” to refer to both Southampton/the current situation and his own managerial career.

Ie “we haven’t picked up as many points as we’d have liked” but also “that’s something we’ve had to adapt to over five years with different players.”

I think it demonstrated how much of this is about him, and his personal ambitions. He also made reference to “this is the style of play I need to play in order to become the coach I want to be” or similar.

And then throw in his post-match interview, which was just all over the place. I can’t imagine the Southampton players would think much of seeing their manager so emotional like he was.

He’s obviously done OK up to this point as a manager but I think his focus on himself is why he can be so divisive (and come across a bit David Brent, a bit High Performance podcast).

Compare how he talks to other managers, and while I’m sure they’re all thinking about themselves too to a lesser or greater degree, they speak about themselves as part of the whole not as leaders standing out by themselves trying to make it all happen. He needs a good media manager, and/or to listen to how other managers do interviews.

Undercover in the home end….
at 21:22 26 Sep 2024

Haha, for every away game so far this season! Like you, am stuck on 14.

Was just in front of Phil at Soton, did see some Town fans react to our equaliser and get kicked out after upsetting a few Saints fans but that was the only moment I’ve seen this year.

Keeping quiet when Szmodics’ goal trickled in in the goal in front of me was one of the harder moments of my Town-supporting life.

I’ll be undercover at West Ham and Brentford too, so see you there - we’ll need to work on some kind of spy signal!

Premier League Years 2000/01
at 23:50 24 May 2024

Partially to distract myself from the rumour mill, I took to watching Premier League Years 2000/01 this evening.

Imagine my anger to note that - despite wins at Elland Road, Anfield, Goodison, despite a record performance for a promoted team and all of Marcus Stewart’s brilliance - the first time we’re featured is the 3-1 win at home to Bradford at beginning of March. March! Very disappointed in Kirstie Gallagher and co.

I’ve managed to make myself angry that our achievements were overlooked 24 years ago. I may be projecting.

Town’s most forgettable XI

Alex Henshall!! Players that you forget for a forgettable XI are truly the most forgettable.

Fryers one of so many full-backs. Clegg, Karbassiyoon, Wabara. Does anyone connect Liam Rosenior with us?!

Fish so bad he was memorable, for me.

Town’s most forgettable XI

A solid trio. Welcome to the club.

Gerry Creaney another, and unsure if Axeldal/Gudmondsson deserve something like cult status just because it wasn’t every day we had a European striker.

David Whyte? Andy Legg? George O’Callaghan? So many keepers, Stephen Henderson?

Brekke Skard always welcome in my team. Dawkins - apparently - played twice, though I wonder if he’ll even remember it.

Town’s most forgettable XI
at 19:03 9 Apr 2024

Inspired by seeing mention of Ben Pringle on an earlier thread - whose Town career almost entirely passed me by - I thought I’d pick an XI of players who I can basically not remember playing for us.

A lot of loanees obviously - my only rule was they have to have actually played. So no Paddy Kenny, Jason Brown of Sean St Ledger.

A lot of these were decent Div 1/Championship players elsewhere (and some even did OK for us), but they’re the kind of players I actually have to check played for us. I’ve gone for a workmanlike, snap-your-hand-off-for-a-point 4-5-1.

Other players very much welcome. Who’s been cruelly overlooked? Any centre forward options? Macken still feels a bit obvious to me.

(Also serves as a nice reminder of how good we are at present, regardless of how the next few weeks go!)

Saturday's Game - Where to watch in London?
at 16:09 7 Mar 2024

Clapham Common is very rugby, jeans and boat shoes BUT The Alexandra is a sports pub with multiple TVs that I've watched Town games at in the past. Generally I've just called them to check whether they can/will show it and they've been very happy to put it on a screen. https://www.alexandraclapham.com/

Also keen if for any reason LB27 doesn't work out.

LB27 - if by any chance you only wanted one ticket, I could get by with just one and would happily pay. Thanks.

This is brilliant. I like the additional stats and now keen to add them to my record.

Hope that never losing against City record becomes relevant and remains the case next season.

This is such a brilliant blog. I love it. So true re the memories. Thanks for sharing.

Ah, I thought my win percentage was pretty special but yours being so similar having seen so many more games suggests that’s not the case!

I’m up to 53 of the 92, and it’s reflective of our status that I’ve got a fair few Premier League grounds to tick off.

Three wins from three at Ashton Gate though so happier memories there!

I grew up in the Midlands but don’t have a particularly good Town record at any Midlands grounds, except Pride Park and the Bescot.

I don’t make too many trips to PR so I won’t curse the current good form but 7 points from 9 for me on the road this season!

I was lucky that I got started years back, but I must admit I can’t be sure it’s 100% accurate. My Town ticket purchase record says I was at a 1-0 loss at home to Palace in 2011 but I can’t remember a second of it.

Would recommend trying to piece together what you can, I found it very nostalgic. Also it really re-emphasised the fun element of being a football fan, the memories etc, especially in the context of how special it is right now.

That is a lot of games! And a brilliant record.

Can you see which player you’ve seen score the most? Scowcroft and Darren Bent for me, at 12 apiece. Shout out to Tommy Smith who’s up in joint fourth. And Josh Carson, because I witnessed 66% of his Town goals.

That app sounds great, I’ll have a look.

You mustn’t be far off doing the 92.
