Then or Now?

Just to add that the above remarks strike me as all exceptionally well-considered: a proper discussion of an interesting couple of propositions (then and now for team and club). Of course, I too hail from the Robson (actually, McGarry) era and that's why it catches my attention and enthusiasm. Well done TWTD blog-section.

Bolton Wanderers 0-2 Ipswich Town - Match Report
at 17:14:00

Isn't Kieran McKenna a marvel? How different this last year has felt compared with every year since the sacking of Jim Magilton. And he oozes football-knowledge, calmness and good sense - confirmed by every comment his players make about him.

A bit to go, perhaps, before he becomes Sir Kieran but I' optimistic he can join those ranks ...

Commentator Woolley Celebrating 20 Years on Mic
at 11:49:45

That's a fine achievement by Brenner. I find him enjoyable to listen to. He's exceptionally knowledgeable and has an easy manner and a great on-air relationship with Mick Mills (who's a splendid pundit on the Town). I've repeatedly heard/read local journalists praise BW's knowledge, attitude and manner.

As a fan who now lives away from Suffolk, I really miss Brenner and Mick on match days. Perhaps fans who live fairly close to Ipswich don't know about how BBC Radio Suffolk is basically jammed online: you have to subscribe to iFollow and login there to hear the local radio audio commentary. That is not a problem, it's not expensive and it has been the arrangement for years and years. But what's happened this season is that the commentary is no longer the BBC one. So Brenner, with Mick and his other away-game pundits, is impossible now to hear if you live outside the broadcast locality of Radio Suffolk. A real shame - presumably makes more £££ for the club - but a sadness for me ... and perhaps other distant fans.

McKenna: Two Big Games, We'll Take Each One as It Comes
at 13:02:59

Tonight will be exceptionally difficult. Nonetheless, I'm excited and getting ready to head for Turf Moor. Kieran McKenna's work and the clever purchases and loans in the last year have, for me, made every game one that I confidently hope will be a watchable and fun experience. Of course, a few don't live up to that wish but - not many. I hope it finishes in 90min - but then, I've never watched a penalty shoot-out live ...

Macauley Bonne seems a very fine and mature young man. His actions and manner here are greatly to his credit.

Cook: Why Shouldn't the Owners Be Excited?
at 12:37:39

Without doubt, ITFC needed a reset. Marcus Evans really did try hard to bring on success but it seemed clear, quite a long time ago now, that it wasn't going to happen. He sold up, as he pledged us, only to people he believed could and would invest both money and football-passion into the club (and thanks, ME, for shouldering those huge losses to leave the new owners with something like a greenfield site). Like many, I'm sorry about the mass exodus - and particularly sorry about certain young and old players - but I fully understand the new brooms' feeling that they needed such a gigantic overhaul. All the fans surely have their fingers crossed for a new era - one that may take a bit of time to come good but will have a sense of direction. As all three of these videos (rather nicely) end: Come on You Blues!

City Floored by Brilliant Viljoen
at 16:29:32

I started watching in season 67-68 (though not at any away games by that teenage stage) and I agree with ChrisFelix and pablovian (great moniker, pablovian) But not that Sir George is left out of the greatest managers list. There are 4: the three mentioned above and Sir George. He did a terrific job with modest resources. Time and again we were nearly promoted, sold players and bounced back for the next season. And the 2000-01 season, a chance on paper of finishing third on the final day of the season, UEFA cup entry ... just remarkable. And playing an entertaining style through all his years.

Swansea City 2-3 Ipswich Town - Match Report
at 17:27:15

The most recent game I've managed to see this season was Sheffield Wednesday. Although we lost, I thought it the most entertaining match I've seen in recent seasons and I left Hillsborough really very optimistic. Sadly, the wins haven't come in until TODAY. Fantastic result! I believe I was at the last match Town won at Swansea, all those years ago in the 80s. Brenner and Andy loved the game today — BW saying it was the best Town match he'd seen in years — referring candidly to the ‘dross' he's been watching over recent seasons. We desperately needed a new chapter.

Sir Bobby had very difficult and unsuccessful early months; I remember vividly hearing the crowd call for his sacking. Surely we can afford to give our young manager some time and space? There are severe dangers in an early sacking — as there are, of course, in sticking with a management team that isn't delivering points. But Paul Hurst came with an intriguing pedigree, and lots of fans thought Marcus Evans brave and creative in his choice. Please don't let pressure from (some) fans lead to hasty decisions. Perhaps PH is beginning to suss out how important is the fans' need to see some of the home-grown young players given a chance. Of course, he had to play his own purchases and loans (probably too many of them for one close-season) but now it may be settling into a phase of opportunity for the lads we've all been hoping to see as break-throughs into the top squad. Cut PH some slack, folks.

Hurst: Quiet Flight Back But Good Reaction and No One Sulking
at 20:37:38

A number of big decisions have been made in the last few months: not renewing MM's contract; Paul Hurst's appointment; allowing Webster and Waghorn (who wanted to leave for the terms offered them elsewhere) to go for pretty decent money; buying promising players from lower divisions. I think that any of these choices could have gone the other way, but they hold together as a strategic plan - one that a great many supporters wanted because of that increasingly stale feeling there was around the whole club. To my mind the only sensible option - for some months to come - is to respect the actions taken in good faith, by the owner and the manager. It makes sense to recognise that if we are to thrive as a result of these choices then it is likely to take time. It took time in our glorious past and, if we are to glimpse some renewal of good times, we'll have to show lots of patience this time around.

Oh - and I really have liked the Paul Hurst interviews. He seems genuine, likeable, level-headed and ambitious. Sir Alf, Sir Bobby and Sir George all had those characteristics (but now I'm letting my optimism run on too far ...).

Harrison Hails Influence of Mum and Marcus Stewart

What we oldsters wouldn't give to have another in the mould of those we recall - in my case the greats I watched up front are Ray Crawford (2nd stint at Ipswich), Paul Mariner, Alan Brazil and - yes - Marcus Stewart (with honorable mentions to Trevor Whymark and both David Johnsons). It's the stuff of that edge-of-the-new-season joy to imagine that Ellis is poised to join them ...

Town Again Linked With Accrington Striker
at 16:03:16

My reading of the remarks by Paul Hurst, and Marcus Evans's impressive interview a few weeks back is this: they can't realistically prevent Waghorn leaving if an impressive fee and an impressive contract are combined. Simply no choice, however disappointing for us all. The Keane/Jewell big-buying experience and the MM lean times for ticket sales has, unfortunately, meant a huge reduction in available money. It's unrealistic to expect anything other than a tight ship. Paul Hurst and up-and-coming player-purchases are a strategy that ME set out for us to hear. I think it is the best current option and we all need to have modest short-term aims and high long-term hopes. It'll take time and I'm hugely encouraged by the high 'like' scores on this site for people who take broadly this view; most realistic and sensible fans are behind this new chapter. Fingers crossed. Oh - and I thought 15,000+ for a friendly was a brilliant welcome to the 2018-19 season.

Phil - are you able to comment on two questions:
First, will such a move away from 3pm Saturday mean that the matches can be visually streamed - for the benefit of those who live outside East Anglia?

Second, if so, will those who already pay for the audio streaming be offered the visual streaming as a pay-per-view extra or as a service that bumps up the subscription a bit (or a lot!)?

Final Chance for Knudsen to Impress Ahead of World Cup Squad Announcement

I think there are a number of players for whom we should reserve some judgement until we see what the new manager's style and instructions are. Full-backs and wing-backs are an example.
