Big Al

Lovely article and great comments.

All I would add is that he kicked the ball out of the ground more than any other player, mostly over the Cobbold Stand. "If you're not sure kick it out" was definitely his belief.

Ted's Greatest Game 1962 Win at Spurs
at 08:44:34

Yes, this breaking the net is genuine. A former work colleague of mine was in goal for Harwich and Parkeston in a pre-season friendly against ITFC. He had to face a Ted Phillips penalty. He swears he didn't see it, and yes, it did break the net. No placing the penalty with Ted! Whack.

Milton: It Had to Be Something Amazing to Take Me Away From Town
at 10:43:46

My son, a Junior Blue at the time, got Milts' autograph the first match after he signed - he wasn't playing, of course. He was so nice with the kids and adult fans.

He remains the best player ever in the pre-match warm-up at shooting.

Simon is a good man, and I'm sure all true Ipswich fans wish him all the very best in his African venture.

McCarthy: Emmanuel Could Make Debut at Brentford
at 13:56:43

Modern misuse of the word legend. Haynes is not a legend. Scoring a couple of goals against Norwich does not a legend make. A legend is someone who has been so outstandingly good that you can hardly believe it can have been true.

Crawford, Philips, Beattie, Wark, Muhren, Stewart - they are legends.

Notes for the New Season - Part Four: Bolton, Forest and Derby
at 11:19:02

I agree totally about the current arrogance of the Derby fans. This is a great shame as not so many years ago they were some of the best fans, and a visit to Derby was one of the most pleasant awayday experiences.

Whoever Wins On Sunday Will Go Up - Notes for Norwich
at 17:05:44

They don't understand (or don't want to understand) the nature of the UEFA Cup in 1981.
Only the champion club of each country played in the European Cup, the predecessor of the so-called Champions League.

This meant that there were seasons when it was generally agreed that the winner of the UEFA was actually the best team in Europe. That was the case in 1981. Ask Michel Platini if you happen to see him. He won't disagree.

Town Draw Southampton in FA Cup
at 20:43:41

The 7 - 0 can't have been late '60s because Alan Brazil starred in the win.

I remember overtaking the Southampton team coach on the A12 and thinking it's a long journey to Hants when you've just been thrashed.

Unbelievably childish comments.
