I was there that day as well! I remember that the Newport keeper being knocked unconscious trying a save a pile-driver from Ted Phillips. If only he was still up front for us!

Reasons for Relegation

I saw my first town game in 1954 and can remember Alf Ramsey getting us out of the old Third Division South in 1957. Now we are back there and the blame lies with those misguided people who hounded out M&M and TC. Mick was a decent man who performed miracles on little money. The players all loved him and he acquired loaners such as Lawrence and Celina to add flair. The treatment he received made me ashamed to be an Ipswich fan, and I have seen it all over more than half a century. "Payback" indeed, for those defiling out club.

Skuse: Horrible, Horrible Day

I rarely comment, but my first visit to Portman Road was back in 1954 and I remember our days in the old Third Division South before Alf Ramsey got us up in 1957 with the likes of Tom Garneys up front. Unlike most people posting, then, I have truly seen it all. While our football was at times unexciting last season, I feel that those people who hounded MM and TC out of our club should feel deeply ashamed of themselves right now. MM was a decent man who performed miracles in keeping us safely in the Championship with little money to spend. The players all loved him and he was able to attract quality loanees of the likes of Lawrence and Celina to add some flair. The abuse MM received was not the "Ipswich Way" of doing things. The appointment of Hurst and what then happened to our club was "payback", indeed.
