| News Comment | Town Topic: Memories of Royle Appointment at 19:06:49
It's really good to read how loved Big Joe is now. I too was at the match before he was appointed, and I was about the only one in the ground not singing "You can stuff Joe Royle up your arse". It got pretty heated on the message board too, I remember. Silly, really. All he did wrong was follow George Burley. Loads of great memories. Shefki goal celebrations, Darren Bent's cool finishing, Danny Haynes' winner, Wigan at home, Palace away and a perfect 5-1 win over Sheff U. More than anything, following Town was fun, and that was down to BFJ's personality. I know someone who worked with him at the club at the time, and she can't speak highly enough of him. He really brought the best out of his players too: Ian Westlake, Matt Richards, Shefki, Tommy Miller, Jimbo, Kelvin Davis, Darren Currie etc. all had purple patches under Royle, often the best of their careers. Obviously, the fare since pales by comparison. |
| News Comment | Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road? at 11:29:35
Cheaper tickets. 33 quid for a match day ticket is frankly scandalous. Big crowds = better atmosphere. Next to free tickets for kids. Without going to matches it's hard keeping your 7 year old son's faith. Not having to buy a match day ticket from a portakabin. Cheaper booze. More drunkeness would help the moribund atmosphere. |
| News Comment | Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management at 20:44:45
I really like Jewell, but this'll just go on for another half season before he's sacked. He'd be better off resigning now, I think. The thing is the likes of Leadbitter, Edwards, Delaney, Chopra and JET should form the nucleus of a good team. But there's no organisation or motivation. And that's down to the manager. A one off bad result we can take, but we've had Norwich, Southampton and Peterborough in the space of a few matches. There are serious problems. |
| News Comment | Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management at 12:27:38
Thought this was a really good read, but didn't agree with it all (a bit easy on JM, I think). Odd that we're supposed to “move on” after several (very well written) paragraphs that rake over Keane's obvious managerial failings *and* his personality. Football fans rallying around a manager at matches is hardly a controversial thing. Totally agree with your point about our rose tinted view of a Corinthian past. Every manager in the internet age is divisive. You should have seen what it was like on here when Joe Royle was manager (which seems plain bizarre now, considering the job he did). If you don't like it stay away from message boards. |

You'll all buy this cheap, itchy, sweaty tut for 60 quid anyway. And your kids. Keane out, comrades. |
| News Comment | Town Settle Magilton Legal Case at 12:47:44
Poor from the club. To not pay off a loyal servant and then indulge in legal brinkmanship is shoddy behaviour, regardless of how good a manager JM was or wasn't. Doesn't indicate we're skint, just that the regime is hard nosed. But football isn't a normal business: no-one is particularly bothered when a high paid executive is booted out of a company, but when you sack someone who scored a hat trick in one of our club's greatest matches, people get annoyed. Rubbish PR, but unsurprising. |
| News Comment | Town Confirm Pablo\'s Palace Loan at 20:38:29
Pablo gave us some great times at PR. Actually, he was best under Royle, despite the apparently fractious relationship. Too long not really doing much, unfortunately. Would have been better for all involved if he'd left a couple of seasons ago, or not even re-signed. Had the sense that he's been coasting a bit at Town; saunter around the pitch, crowd sing 'Ole Ole Ole' etc. etc. Might do OK at a new club. Might not do anything. |
| News Comment | Tottenham Make Wickham Bid at 21:53:09
Obviously I'd like to see Wickham stay and get us promoted and/or sell him for £30m, but... £5m's a fair bit, and if it was the opening offer (assuming there's anything in this...) If he's as a good as we think he could be he'll be gone soonish anyway; he only has 2 years on his contract. £5m+ and loaned back for a season isn't terrible business IMO. |

| News Comment | David Wright Confirms His Town Exit at 12:21:25
Well, Keane has at least been consistent in his treatment of Wright; he was one of five players told at the start of the season that he wasn't in the manager's plans. Wright's a good player in my opinion; solid, dependable, flexible etc., qualities that can be underrated. If he's a high earner it makes sense, I guess, but I genuinely think the only reason is that Keane's not a fan. Let's just hope he has a good replacement lined up. |
| News Comment | Keane Appreciates Evans\'s Patience at 11:40:31
As ever Keane is talking a lot of sense; our senior players *should* be taking more of a lead. At the moment it seems they're just going with the (depressing) flow. I can understand why Keane told 5 players that they weren't wanted at the club at the start of the season (Garvan etc. just aren't that good, unfortunately), but it's obviously affected performance. There's no side at all to Keane, which is one reason we fans like him, but it can obviously cause problems. Still, performance is ultimately the manager's responsibility. I think it'd be wrong to sack Keane unless we were relegated - any manager deserves some time to get things right - but if I were him I'd be worried. The club's print communication channel (also known as 'The Evening Star') was openly very critical yesterday (excepting Phil's column). |
| News Comment | Loan Bid for Hull Veteran Turned Down? at 12:47:45
Also, we lack a really experienced figure in midfield. Old heads are needed to get you promoted. I believe we went for Boateng earlier in the season? |
| News Comment | Loan Bid for Hull Veteran Turned Down? at 12:43:46
I actually think Kilbane's an underestimated player (rather like Lee Carsley was at Everton). He can play full back or across the midfield (I remember him as MOTM against France for the Republic in Paris during a world cup qualifier, where he played central midfield), so he would be useful. |
| News Comment | Who Was Town\'s Player of the Decade? at 21:39:13
Marcus Stewart Fab Magilton Darren Bent JDV I liked Kuqi a lot, but contribution too brief (ditto Pablo) Kelvin Davis Walters (we need one current player!) McGreal Holland Hermann |

Ditto Mark's collection, which was jolly good - Jimmy Robertson Down the Wing I seem to recall, and something about footballers eating steak... |
