Town Confirm Hurst Appointment

Oops- I meant to include Flynn Downes in the list of promising midfiled players. Just to emphasise the point:-

Flynn Downes- 5 x Eng U19 Caps
Andre Dozzell 32 Eng caps (U16 to U19)
Teddy Bishop- called up Eng U19- withdrew through injury
Trisan Nydam 1 x Eng U18, 1 x Eng U19
Emyr Huws- 12 x Full Wales caps

Town Confirm Hurst Appointment

Interesting article in Telegraph about Hurst:- https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/01/15/shrewsbury-town-have-reason-exci (paywall but you can sign-up and get free access to a few articles per week). I liked this quote (after the Shrews had drawn 0-0 with West Ham in the FA Cup):-

“I look at Liverpool against Man City and Liverpool showed best way to go about stopping a team playing. In this game, you have joy from giving it a go. That’s what we did on the day. We were on the front foot. We’ll try and approach it in the same manner. I don’t have any different tactics home or away, you’re trying to win matches wherever you are."

As long he plays attacking football and makes the most of our youngsters he'll be backed by Town fans. If we can have much better luck with injuries next season, I could see us getting promoted. Which Championship has more unfulfilled potential in midfield than Dozzell, Bishop, Nydam, Adeyemi, Ward and Huws?

Emmanuel-Thomas: Time for New Adventure
at 10:56:55

Of course JET could become a very good player but he's had many chances and MM & TC have had plenty of time to take a close look at him. MM seems to deal in certainties not wishful thinking. Taking into account that retaining JET could trigger more fees, I think MM has made a wise decision. I'd like to see us take a punt on a two or three young, hungry players from outside the Premier League- that's where we've had most success on the transfer market- Walters, Cresswell, Chambers, Hewitt, Loach, Nouble, McGoldrick (sure I've missed some)

I don't think that players that have been stars or been at 'massive' clubs in the Premier league are hungry enough to play in the Championship- Chopra, Bowyer, Reo-Coker, JET, Martin spring to mind- sure I've missed some. I suppose Carlos is the exception that proves the rule.

I suppose I'm really talking about attitude- hunger, a little humility and professionalism. Our experience has shown that you're much more likely to find these attributes in players if they see ITFC as career progression rather than a step-down.

I would suggest the reason that Hyam looked unpolished today is because he has not been given the chance to sparkle by three successive managers.

Good Blog! But I'm also a loon so I'm not sure my opinion counts. I agree with others that Karl Robinson fits the bill, read this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/sep/24/mk-dons-karl-robinson-sunder

He seems to pride himself on developing passing teams and young players.

N'Daw Loan Signing Confirmed
at 17:04:43

Jewell has expressly said that he has been brought in as a midfield player, not a centre-back. I guess we all agree that Luongo and Hyam deserve an extended run in central midfield. Therefore, in the short-term, he will not provide extra height and strength to our starting line-up.

Judging by Jewell's recent remarks about Hyam amd Luongo, I would imagine he's been brought in as a squad player and not a first team regular. Obviously that will probably change due to injuries and/or loss of form. Things are looking up when an experienced international is just a squad player!

If N'Daw has been brought in as cover for Hyam, Luongo and Drury and/or to close out games in the last 20 minutes then that's ok.

If he's played at the expense of Hyam (either immediately or as soon as Hyam has one or two poor games) then I would see that as a backward step.

These are this muppet's last random warblings on the subject (I thought it was the ITFC way to play the ball and not the man).

To those that say he's only here to add experience to a very young midfield. He can only add that experience if he plays at the expense of one of those young midfield players. I admit I'm a bit paranoid on Hyam's behalf but, given the way he's been treated over the last couple of seasons, I'm probably justified.

We have started the season playing attacking, possession football. Our young midfield players have shown that they are energetic, committed and skillful. I would hate us to switch to a more robust style based on big, powerful players just because we struggled to adapt to threat posed by Chris Iwelumo for 10 minutes or so.

At long last the penny seems to have dropped with more and more English teams that the beautiful game should be based on skill, movement, passing and, most importantly, teamwork. I would hope that ITFC would have similar aspirations. If that means conceding the odd goal from a set piece that's a small price to pay.
