Town Linked With Mackail-Smith Bid
Town Linked With Mackail-Smith Bid
Wednesday, 27th Apr 2011 08:57

Town’s continued monitoring of Peterborough striker Craig Mackail-Smith has led to a number of this morning’s newspapers linking the Blues with a £2 million summer move for the 27-year-old. On Friday, TWTD reported that chief scout Steve McCall was at Posh’s 2-1 defeat at Leyton Orient, while manager Paul Jewell has also watched the Scotland international frontman in action.

The one-time St Albans Town, Arlesey Town and Dagenham and Redbridge striker was close to joining Norwich in March and looks certain to leave London Road in the summer having rejected a new contract. The 5ft 8in tall goal-getter’s current terms are up in the summer of 2012.

Watford-born Mackail-Smith has scored 31 goals this season, earning his first and so far only international cap for the country of his grandmother’s birth in a 2-0 defeat to Brazil in March. Previously he had played for England C, the non-league national side.

Town and the Canaries are unlikely to be the only clubs interested in the man who was recently named this season's League One Player of the Year.

On paper a good signing. Done very well this season and to all those who say he is unproven at this level, I seem to remember him doing pretty well in their relegation season a few years ago (for a struggling side). With only a year left on his contract, the price is likely to drop a little from when Norwich were after him in January, however £2m is still a lot of money (that said, it's not that much more than we paid for Priskin!)

Here's to a productive summer!

We seem to be linked here, there, and everywhere to every Tom, Dick & Harry. I wont be getting excited untill we ACTUALLY SIGN one of these so called targets.

denhamblue. Excactly, at present, we haven,t signed anyone & are hardly looking an attractive proposition to potential transfer targets. I just hope Mr Jewells powers of persuasion are good, they will need to be.

he will need to score 5 goals a game for us if we are going to have any chance of winning a few games next year judging by the last few games and can he make his mind up is he a mackail or a smith ?

well all I can say , having read thro this lot, is it's going to be aone of the most interestibg summers at ITFC for many a year - and the biggest Trolls will be the norwich owned EADT and Evening Star, with their incompetant journos!!

I think that this is as close to a genuinely interesting/exciting moment for Ipswich - i.e. being LINKED with a player.

Have we all forgotten that players really don't fall over themselves to come here and the only ones we get are folk that no-body else wants. In other words, look forward to a bunch of unheard of youngsters from tiny clubs and bloated, old-farts wanting another pay-packet from anyone who'll have them.

I hate to sound so cynical but recent history bears out my theory.

Finally, if you were Smith and you'd already knocked Norwich back, what on earth would make you want to come to us? (I know that this too is a very painful realisation for us - but Norwich are a LOT better prospect that us...)

Painful days to be sure...

I think this player would be a great signing for us, he's exactly what we need and 26 goals at league 1 level is way good enough to play in the champipnship. Would love to see him here
