Blues Young Player of the Year Omari Hutchinson has reportedly already been called back to parent club Chelsea.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful season on loan with the Blues, netting 11 times in his first full campaign in senior football.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea have told the Jamaica international that they want him back at the club next week in order to run the rule over him in training and hold talks regarding his future.

Town fans - and manager Kieran McKenna - have made it clear they want him back at Portman Road next season, while the player himself was non-committal when asked following Saturday’s match, although previously having said he’d welcome a return to Portman Road in 2024/25.

Other clubs at home and elsewhere in Europe are also said to expressed an interest in loaning Hutchinson, who has a year left on his Chelsea contract but with the club having an option for a further season.

Reports last week claimed they were looking to offer him new terms, although it’s thought talks on a new deal are still to take place, and it’s understood Chelsea will need to sell players over the summer to comply with the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Whether Hutchinson, who is believed to be valued at around £20 million, is among them remains to be seen with a number of Europe’s big clubs having previously been linked and with his spell at Town having been keenly watched.


But, as it stands, the former Arsenal academy player is expected to go on Chelsea’s pre-season tour to the US in July with decisions on his future likely to be made after that.

Town are only able to loan two players in the Premier League, which will give manager McKenna some tough decisions.

But, speaking after Saturday’s game, the Blues boss said he’d like to keep some of this season’s loan players at the club.

“For sure, it’s a special group,” he said. “We’ve had success with that last year, keeping the group together, bringing in someone like George [Hirst] on loan and the way he’s escalated.

“Of course, we’ll look at all possibilities, we’ll build a squad as strong as we can but the players we’ve had in on loan this year have been an absolute credit to themselves and have been a really big part of the group.”

Fellow forward Jeremy Sarmiento impressed during his half-season spell from Brighton and Hove Albion and at the time he joined in January it was reported in Ecuador that the loan switch could be extended into a second season.

Tricky summer ahead I thin ...

HighgateBlue added 12:30 - May 8 What does "recalled" mean in this context? We have finished our season, and we were told that it was a season-long loan. Was he still officially a Town player until a fixed date in the future unless Chelsea exercised this recall? Not sure it really indicates anything to us about his likely destination for next season in any event.

WestSussexBlue added 12:37 - May 8 He’s already shown he’s potentially a massive talent and at 20 years old will certainly be costing close to the asking price. He’s firmly put himself in the shop window should Chelsea want to sell him. Personally, I think they’d be mad too. He’s a more assured and composed Sterling when he’s on the ball, nothing ghostly about his pace and balance! There’s no better coach currently across Europe for improving players in my opinion so I can see Chelsea allowing him back for another season. The only drawback, they’ll most certainly say he doesn’t feature in the fixtures against them.

Transfer window will be very interesting , we have a few players that aren't up to prem, some that may be, Survival next year will be the biggest challenge. If we do that i think most of us will be happy, there are a couple on here that will be going into meltdown if we are not in top 4 by October.

Bellevue_Blue added 12:57 - May 8 @HighgateBlue - Recalled just presumably means they have formally 'ended' the loan meaning that he can train with the Chelsea first team and as such, we won't have to pay the % salary that we would have likely been obliged to pay up until the end of May/ June had it not been ended.

JewellintheTown added 12:59 - May 8 I'm not going to be popular as I know we all love the guy, but he's not coming back & we know it, sorry. Chelsea will cash in or go loan somewhere else to broaden his skill set and experience. His brilliance under KM is also our curse & opened up new options for him with all the recognition he's now getting. We love our club and Hutch seems to have mutually enjoyed it here, but for so many reasons I'm accepting he wont be back. Our success will also open doors now, so we may find a new gem that's our own.

pennblue added 13:24 - May 8 I hope he returns, but until we have anything definitive we have to proceed as if he wont be. We can't afford to run the gauntlet with our transfer strategy this summer, there are a ton of players that would love to play regular Premier League football, lets not forget that, and there are plenty of Championship players of a similar ilk, that would like to take that step up, especially being coached by McKenna.

Bazza8564 added 13:31 - May 8 let's be logical here, the guy is a mile away from the first team at Chelsea and with all the factors taken into consideration im pretty sure they will be thinking about fee requirements rather than anything else. It's suits us too, two loans is restrictive, Sarmiento's loan includes an option for another year so I believe we will try to sign him and keep another loan up our sleeves. In the back of my mind Im thinking Man Utd owe us a big favour after the fiasco with Brandon Williams' loan having cost us an absolute fortune with no break clause. Interesting summer ahead

Ebantiass added 13:37 - May 8 Would absolutely love him to stay but the truth is we cant afford chelskis asking price and plenty others can. He loves it here and has been far better than John Jules Scarlett and others we have loaned. Though I hope the gaffa gets rid of at least four or five from the squad i still dont think we would or could stump up 20 plus million. Going to be a tricky but interesting summer break.

Europablue added 13:55 - May 8 It never pays to dwell too much on a good loanee, however good they were (Bersant Celina) comes to mind. There is a realistic chance that we can do a deal on Omari, but there is also a good chance that an established Premier League team with a bit more cash will swoop in. Chelsea don't care about anything but the fee. I will just be grateful for the season he had with us and what he helped us to achieve, and have no expectations of him coming back although I would welcome him back, especially as a permanent signing.

Phil1969 added 13:58 - May 8 Don’t know what all the fuss is about. Yes he is a very good player. No he won’t be in next seasons Chelsea squad. Now we are Premier there are countless players of his ability available if things don’t work out between both parties. He wasn’t in the team pre Feb!

Denny32 added 14:58 - May 8 Chelsea only knows too well that unless they play him from day one or at least on the bench and brought on as an impact sub like we have done..he will only get rusty from little match time and be less effective..so that's why I see him coming back to us in whatever shape or form...and also he is a bit light and still needs to bulk up a bit as he will be coming up against a lot more athletic. Stronger and technically better players...so a season with us will give a better ideas how he will cope

Radlett_blue added 16:12 - May 8 If we borrow Hutch from Chelsea again, he can't play against them whatever they say - it's a rule that you can't play against your parent club. Lots of thinking to be done, mostly by Chelsea & Hutch. If they offer him a new contract, should he sign it, because he's likely to be loaned out again. If he's loaned out again, Town would make sense for everyone now that we're in the PL. If a full transfer happens, I would love us to sign him, but wouldn't this blow a lot of our transfer budget & how would he fit into our wage structure?

Cloddyseedbed added 16:58 - May 8 Recalled as his loan is effectively over. He'll have talks on his future and his and the clubs thoughts moving forward. I imagine he will be made aware if he is not already aware of interest that has come in since his successful loan spell at Ipswich. It is for Chelsea then to decide if they want to keep him, loan him out or sell him for a realistic sum. With clubs now paying more attention to their spending and balancing the books within the rules the latter could be the option they want to take. Can we afford him, would he like a permanent move to us, thinking/knowing we will probably struggle in Premiership? It's anyone's guess.

Lots of issues and opportunities to consider in KMck’s in tray including who we may want to loan out to lower league clubs. The last three words I didn’t think we would ever be able to utter.

If only two loans then he is a big possibility.As Chelsea will want him to play in the Prem next season and he has enjoyed his time at Town. Will Town pay £20 million for him don’t think Town will but other clubs in the Prem and Europe will. If Town have £20 million to spend I would prefer them to buy 4 class players than put in all on one player
