It doesn't matter what individual MPs think, they should submit to the party line at all times. It's called democratic centralism.

Nah she's a crank, a twonk, a Corbynista, an antisemite, a terrorist sympathiser, a Trot, a Tankie, a Red under the bed, a threat to democracy, a student politico, the crazy world of Arthur Brown, etc etc etc.

The risk for Labour is that they've stuck their finger up at the majority of their members, and therefore those who do the bulk of the campaigning. It seems to me they've arrogantly mistaken leading in the poles for popularity. If that pole lead narrows, who will be out there campaigning with enthusiasm? And what exactly will they be campaigning for?

How are people not more concerned by this bare faced dishonesty? I can't wait to see the back of this awful government, but I'm really starting to wonder how much difference it will actually make.

Who wrote that, Owen Smith? We shall see but I'd be very surprised if he didn't win.

How many times in 40 years did he vote with Labour?

The 'bureaucratic centralism' power structure now in place will lead to an ever diminishing membership, which in turn will lead to the party having to become more and more reliant on wealthy party donors and the self interested demands that come with them. Further diluting the choice offered to the electorate. How depressing.

All the talk of "purges" and "Stalinism" under Corbyn were so far wide of the mark. In fact the opposite was true, with the likes of John McDonnell bending over backwards to appease the right of the party. It is now the least democratic it has ever been, and I think it's no coincidence that many of the New Labour ideologues were all former YCL / CPGB / Marxism Today supporters.

Professsional football club trials.... thoughts?!
at 12:40 24 May 2024

I think it's beneficial at that age not to encourage positions and let the kids express themselves on the ball, rather than focus on winning. The "just get rid of it" mentality seems to be dying off (though many parents are very vocal that that's still what they want). With some kids it's obvious where they'll play. My boy for example has been a centre half since he started. We've tried him all over the pitch but no matter what he always ends up sitting deep. I've seen many other kids however pigeon-holed in to positions only to thrive once they've been moved as they got older.

That sounds similar to the experiences of a couple of young players I coach who had trials at Ipswich at that age. I assume the logic is to see which players stand out in an uncoached environment. I also think it's deliberately tough on the first timers to see how they cope in the situation.

Although I don't think he'll be offered the job, if he is of course he'll take it. He has to back himself, and if he succeeds it puts him in the very top bracket of European managers.

He will win. He's an extremely popular constituency MP, local members have been barred from the selection process of their own candidate, and Corbyn will vote with a Labour government more than he doesn't, so will essentially remain a Labour MP in all but name, so frustrated Labour voters won't fear facilitating the Tories by voting for him.

When the election was called yesterday, I was half expecting him to be announced as a member of the Conservatives today, with them pinning their election hopes on him.

I'm not bothered if he goes, he should have been sacked following the Maidstone disgrace. Not to mention the fact that we bottled the title.
