I would put in a bit of a report on how it is watching from a distant land.... Moved away from UK back in 2000 straight after the last time we were promoted to the promised land. Literally the next month but made the play off semis and crept in through the open gates just before extra time , do they still do that ? Great party on the pitch but no recollection of players joining in. Left that summer to go to Botswana to teach in the Kalahari on a short 3 year contract as needed a change of lifestyle and scene. Fortunately two teachers in the school loved Football both Scots and subscribed to DSTV Southern African version of SKY which showed the Prem live but only generally three matches a week. Also a Cuban , Nico, who loved football and beer and girls as did Jimmy and Pete. I managed to resist two of those temptations as I had my wife with me but the occasional game in the first year showed Town and it was great. The second year was not so good for obvious reasons and the guys left me to the football when they went to the local bars and came back blotto with girls I recognised from my classes.... Should never have been accepted but as most girls in our college were 18 plus it seemed accepted by the management and the local teachers did the same.
We left to come to NZ in 2003 and heard nothing for a few years from them Nico died from alcohol poisoning I think and never made it back to Cuba, Peter has been in contact a couple of times and is still there married with kids and Jimmy had to leave and last I heard was in Edinburgh but when I was there 2 years ago i couldn`t raise a reply from him. Anyway Football here was very low key on tv and in the cities initially local teams played but nobody went to see them. My son came out here in 2007 and played locally so it was good to watch him and they did well in the Wellington Capital leagues . Then NZ qualified for the World cup finals and the funds they got were invested in youth football and Wellington Phoenix were accepted into the Aussie A league but it was average until recently. A long time passed and the dross served up at Portman Road left me to check the scores occasionally but not get over interested apart from going whenever I came back every 2/3 years. Nothing at all shown live on the internet or Sky here so missed the bad years. Then last time i was home with my family was the close season and the West Ham friendly so we got 4 tickets right behind the goal in the North Stand and we loved it. Entertaining and brilliant. Then comes along Towntv and I was able to get up at 2/3/4 am and watch it live and it was a revelation. Then last year it was shown on Bein sport 20 or more times or Towntv live otherwise and now we have 2/3 of us watching it in our small town. Concerned for next season how it will be broadcast as dont like Sky but the ride has been good so far . Thanks for reading if you did and think of us poor supporters out in the wilderness.
and what a couple of seasons its been. All to play for but not sure I want us to get to the promised land yet. Its not just the money its enjoying the matches and not being thrashed and the dreaded VAR decisions. Its also the changes and new players being bought in who may not have the same motivation. Or am I just worried about the failures of the last time we were there. Plus would have to get sky to watch it down here as Towntv will not cover all the games like this season and it wont be on Bein.
