Between The Lines, The Irreverent Poetry Of Ipswich Town. No.20 - The C Word

Well what a difference a few days makes. From possibly the worst performance under Kieran McKenna to probably the best this season. That elusive mistress ‘Confidence’ seemed to be the key here.

The teams started with opposite amounts of it, but some crucial saves by Christian Walton and then that first goal, Sindre Walle Egeli’s second in two games, just before half-time, seemed to start the tipping of the scales.

Coventry looked good in spells, but we dominated the second half and exploited them as they tried to get back into it, with Jaden Philogene working his socks off and Marcelino Núñez pulling the strings.

Sometimes confidence comes from simple hard work and perseverance, which we saw with both George Hirst and Iván Azón’s goals.

Now we need to keep hold of that fickle mistress!

Ipswich Town 3:0 Coventry 06/12/2025

The C Word

Critically, it ebbs and flows.
On where it comes from, nobody knows.
Not in crops, or shops like Waitrose.
Find it, mind, and it kinda grows.
It’s near, or here, or unassailable.
Dear (other stores are available).
Egeli has it, shared it out.
Núñez spreads it on bread no doubt.
Coventry turned up, top, with plenty.
Evidently, left on empty.

(This poem is an acrostic, meaning the first letters of each line spell out a word. Have a gold star if you spotted it!)

The rearranged washout turned out to be even more of a damp squib than the literal one of two and a half months ago. Worryingly, possibly the worst performance under Kieran McKenna.

Football can be a frustrating game. And this one was so typical of Ipswich. Nearly 80% possession in the first half. By the end, 17 shots, seven on target, two one-on-ones, one rattled post. And yet we come away with nothing but Leif’s lovely whack. So here’s some words to sum it up.

Another six changes, more lack of cohesion, and the less said about the first half the better. But we upped the tempo, brought on the subs, and it was comfortable in the end. Good for Akpom to get off the mark, even if it was a very-close-to-offside tap-in my mum could’ve got. McKenna, like a skilled surgeon, knows what he’s doing. Pass the scalpel, let's dissect this one.

Well, Ipswich left you wanting more, didn’t they? So I’ve taken it upon myself to give you more. It’s not the same as goals, but I like to do my bit. And these are free, let’s not forget!

Poor Cameron Burgess. I decided to dedicate this poem to him rather than dwell on his two own goals against his former team. Well, sort of. I seem to have still mentioned them quite a lot.

Bit late, soz. I made some notes about domination last week, and much like Ipswich, failed to finish them off. Oo-er missus.

Apologies to TWTD’s tech wizard Gav, who I unashamedly stole that word off. But there are signs of gelling throughout the team, and none more so than with Sindre Walle Egeli who probably had his best game yet.

Between The Lines no.12 - Jack In The Socks
Another bloody 12.30 kick-off, and a subsequently flat atmosphere and flat game. Insomnia by Faithless played out over the Tannoy before kick-off, and the game itself was almost the cure. Only lit up by Jack Clarke’s late twinkle toes.

What a bizarre game that was. If you had to go off somewhere after the first half and then found out later that the final score was 0-3 you’d be utterly baffled. As am I.

It seems last week I was a bit premature with the nautical theme. In this week’s there’s also a bonus ex-player reference, for those of you older than 25 to spot. There’s even a Greek god reference.

So you may have noticed, I've changed the name from Flowing Moves to Between The Lines. I just think it's a better title. Because obviously football is played 'between the lines' on the pitch. And also, with any kind of literary work (and especially mine) one should always read between the lines!

I'm not sure why this one came out like this. I think some of you calling for a different rhyme scheme got into my brain, but this stream of consciousness came to me upon waking this morning. Sometimes I just tune in, and it all drops out. It's best not to ask questions.

I decided to set myself a challenge for the new season - to write a poem match report for every league game. Why? I’ve no idea really.
