More potentially destabilising world news
at 17:21 19 May 2024

The Iranian President's helicopter crashed (or crash-landed) in a remote mountainous area of the country's north west this afternoon. Unclear yet on whether lives have been lost.

Edit: Not looking good from latest reports.

This is what you get

from decades of governments who refuse to spend money on necessary things because it won't allow them to make tax cut bribes at election time and keep wealthy/corporate donors on-side.

Mental heath provision - especially residential - has been pretty much dismantled since the advent of "Care" in the Community during the 1980s. As you will know if you've ever had to plead for suicidal friends to be taken into hospital, with the response "You look after them".

It's interesting that

outside our "bubble", McKenna's name is much less mentioned in connection with the ManU job as a candidate right now (rather than one for the future).

But would have been six points and three places worse off without it, according to this article.

or, if McKenna should be poached by ManU, do we trust Ashton to pick another top candidate? As this article suggests, he already has ideas of whom to approach. We will not be caught cold.

Do they really think they could fill it on a regular basis? That's larger than the population of the entire town.

Woke up this morning
at 10:05 5 May 2024

It was sunny and my mind went back to the Morsy curler at Forest Green and John-Jules taking the ball, turning, running through and scoring at Shrewsbury. Seems an age ago, but it was the beginning of this amazing run.

Guthrum's Confirmed Final Table

No form needed.

I did say that losing no more than six games and drawing not more than twice that number would put us in a great place for automatic promotion. And that's exactly what the team did!

Guthrum's Estimated Final Table

One more time, just for fun. Almost entirely meaningless at this stage of the season (e.g. Leeds and Southampton can't both lose). As much to record the possibilities of the final game as anything else.

I really think that the length and intensity of this top-two race
at 10:21 27 Apr 2024

has told on the teams in with a shout. Especially when you consider the heavily-Prem squads of our rivals were used to eight fewer games in a season.

It's like old footage of marathons, where the one who could stagger over the line won, while others collapsed just short.

The short break courtesy of Cov and the Cup may have given us the refresh we needed for this final push. Not to mention the chance of getting players like Burns back from injury. Even if we can only get 20 or 30 minutes out of him, that could be vital.

The home v away thing
at 12:48 24 Apr 2024

The teams, manager and coaches are the same as normal. The energy of our away fans is at least equal to the sum of most home crowds. The pitch is roughly the same shape and size as any other. Travel is comfortable, with hotel stays where necessary.

Why is being away from home considered such a disadvantage?

Admittedly, it'd be different if we were taking only a few hundred to other grounds, but we're pretty much always selling out.

Is the difference purely psychological?

Won't be many more of these this season, get a bit pointless with just one or two games left.
