The events of the last fortnight or so have really piqued my interest in how these sorts of things work. Can anyone point me towards any good books which shed some light on the inner machinations of contract negotiations? Similarly, is there anything out there that digs a little bit into how client/agent relationships work? It’s always puzzled me the amount of sway that agents seem to have in player/manager negotiations, from suggestions that a lot of the unpleasantness of the last fortnight has been very much agent led, to the circumstances that seemingly led to Lukaku’s agent seeming to overrule RL’s preferences during his move to Chelsea/Man Utd a few summers back. |
| Forum Thread | These legal issues with KM's contract at 18:11 29 May 2024
I assume the issue isn't that the employer has been stated as 'Ipswich Town Football Club Limited', whilst Kieran and his advisors were expecting that particular section to read 'Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club Limited'? All banter era style fatalism aside, though, I get that it's going to be an incredibly complex document, and hope that whatever potential drafting issues have been identified will be resolved soon. |

Just watching the F1, and seeing CH on screen reminded me that the whole 'dodgy shenanigans' affair seems to have died a complete and utter death. The last time I heard/read anything of it, Red Bull Racing was getting absolute pelters for having disciplined the alleged victim, and that seems to have been the end of it. Did it end up petering out/reaching a conclusion, or is it now potentially the sort of territory where we're legally not allowed to discuss that we're now no longer allowed to discuss it? |

This sub from the AFL grand final very much has the air of Pro Evo about it: Are there any other current or former players who sound more like Pro Evo versions, than actual players? |
| Forum Thread | Do the Tories *want* to win the GE? at 09:03 24 May 2024
I'm not necessarily referring to the individual MPs and the grassroots support, but more the 'high command' side of things, who'll have their eyes on the longer-term plan. They've been salting the earth for the last 12-18 months now and, with the timing of the GE being called, will be leaving a lot of very costly live hand grenades for an incoming government to have to deal with - compensation for the Blood and Post Office scandals, leasehold reform (which will be subject to long and costly challenges from freeholders), etc., I recall that the last Budget in particular was met with comments from a number of decent sources saying that it appeared designed to do serious damage to the next Chancellor. Why would the Tories want to inherit that particular mess? After three pretty hefty blunders from Sunak in the first 24hrs of the campaign (Sky News being kicked out of the launch event, taking questions from stooges, and his football gaffe in Wales), it'll be interesting to see whether the Tory campaign may find itself beset by the sorts of faux pas which would perhaps steer floating voters away from them, I get the feeling that the Tories might rather sit out the next five years, whilst heckling Labour from the sidelines, and then ride back in on a wave of further discontent in 2029. |

Signed permanently for Barnet:
Was he out of contract, or have we sold/released him? |

Any chance of (even temporarily) adding in a Politics tab for the forum? It'd be handy to be able to see the various GE-related threads at a glance and, no doubt, it will be a panacea to the 'this isn't a politics forum!!!' crowd over the next six weeks. |
| Forum Thread | How do managerial payoffs work? at 08:00 21 May 2024
Say a club wanted to sign a sacked and unemployed manager who was still within their original contract period with their previous employer and, as such, seemingly still subject to their payoff. Would signing for a new club void the entirety of the remaining payoff, meaning that the club would most likely be expected to make up the shortfall? Or would the remaining payoff be reduced in line with the value of the new contract? (edited for clarity) [Post edited 21 May 8:04]

| Forum Thread | Your semi-regular reminder... at 17:39 18 May 2024
Bookies tend to know about as much about 'next manager' markets as you and I. Their odds are dictated by who's having money put on them, rather than them knowing who's going to get the job. Panic ye not. |

| Forum Thread | Umbro/Castore at 15:29 8 May 2024
Just came across this tweet from FootballShirtCulture, which reminded me of Castore's recent acquisition of Umbro:
A little bit of digging suggests that Burnley's deal with Umbro wasn't due to expire until 2026 ( https://www.lancs.live/sport/football/football-news/burnley-kit-umbro-partnershi "Burnley's previous agreement with Umbro concluded in 2022 but the new agreement will see the Manchester-based firm work with the Clarets until 2026." So it potentially looks as if Castore are already migrating clubs over to their own brand, rather than continuing old Umbro deals. I bloody hope that we're not in line for this treatment. From what I've heard, Castore kit quality has been utterly abysmal. |

Did I miss him having a spell at RB or something early on in the season? Tiniest fly in the ointment of an absolutely perfect day was him and his mates poncing about on the pitch as if they'd played an integral part in the season's events. I'm sure MA is just keeping him sweet to ensure that the club gets the juicy pay-day that would come from hosting a fight, but he definitely needs ITFC more than the club needs him right now. |
| Forum Thread | Bottom 7 comparison at 17:04 3 May 2024
Just in an attempt to calm the nerves, I put together this table showing how the bottom clubs have fared against those in the promotion picture. If it's any solace going into tomorrow, it would appear that all of the top seven have had their struggles away against the lesser sides in the division, but have (generally) fared a lot better at home. |
