It's still not quite believable it's it? The quality Leeds have at their disposal is unreal. The thing is, we truly deserved to be there, it's not as if it was handed to us on a plate either.

Crime: perceptions divorced from reality?
at 18:17 16 May 2024

I'm not saying it doesn't reflect reality, I'm saying it's not reality. There's a difference between the two things. You could take 2 surveys asking 75,000 people their feelings on crime and then their experience of crime, I'm pretty sure the questions on their feelings would bring similar results between the two surveys but their experience could be wildly different. It's very dependent on the people you ask and also their honesty when talking about crime.

Which is fine for gathering the public "feeling" on something but the thread is about comparing that feeling to reality. A percentage of peoples experience of being victims of crime is not reality, no matter how high the percentage.

The thread is called "Crime: perceptions divorced from reality?", the nations perceptions could possibly be gathered by a survey but reduction in crime cannot. To claim crime has been reduced you need all data not a survey of 0.1% of the population, otherwise it's not reality.

To be fair to him, what were you expecting from the tattoo? I can't say I was expecting him to get a coloured ITFC badge on his chest or a picture of Kierans face on his arse. It's a fairly subdued tattoo in a rather innocuous place, which is kinda what I'd expect a rather well kept CEO to have done if he was having a tattoo!

Is it not kind of presumptive to survey 0.1% of the population and then state crime is decreasing based on the results. This maybe massive survey compared to others but it's a tiny sample compared to the total population.

The only true way to know if crime really is falling is to study police figures, but if the baseline on how these stats is being changed by the governors of this information all the time we don't have a true datum to compare to do we?

I'm basing it on my knowledge of the people around me, it's not totally based on assumption. I guess you could say it's my "weighting mechanism", but I couldn't be sure as you still didn't answer the question I asked!

I'm not being awkward here, I'm genuinely interested. What are examples of these "mechanisms" though please? I want to understand how this data can be representative if large parts of the demographic that are mostly affected by the survey topic are not involved.

Okay, help me out here then please. I'm no statistician and I appreciate your answers so far but you're not telling me how this Survey can be representative if this demographic doesn't step forward with their experience. Surely a survey is only representative to the people that participate, it is just a survey and not a study into reported crime. What kind of methodologies are there to make this data representative without people from all walks of life participating?

Which is what proves my point, it massively depends on who you speak to as to whether these statistics ring true. My eyes and ears show me that crime in my area is higher than I've known, I can't speak for all downtrodden areas but I see many of the less affluent areas around me suffering with the same growing issues we have here. If this information is where the biggest hole in the data is then it won't be representative, this is the type of area where the biggest swing in criminal activity tends to happen.

My mum lives in an area in Norfolk where she's still used to not locking her doors as crime just doesn't happen there, but I guarantee you she is the one more likely to reply to a letter or answer her door to help with a survey than pretty much any of the neighbours on the row of terrace houses I live in.

If you don't have the data from all groups then surely overall data is not representative no matter how you weigh it up!

Indeed, I'm sure that is the case. The point I'm raising is that these surveys will be voluntary, most likely by way of a letter being posted or cold callers knocking on doors both of which are highly likely to be ignored in areas like where I live!

Serves me right for skim reading...

...but as alluded to by another poster above these figures can be massively skewed by the area results are taken from. I live in a not-so-salubrious area in a town in the Midlands. Crimes like fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour are at worse levels than at any point since I moved here nearly 30 years ago. I can't imagine half the families around here would entertain any kind of survey they have been asked to participate in to give these statistics any kind of "real world" merit. The other take from this is car crime is going to be in decline as technology has improved massively over the years to hamper car thieves, you can't just prize a window open and hot-wire a car nowadays.
