When I first heard the "Waka Waka" song I hated it. Now, I can't stop singing it to myself. That is all. |

Listening to Radio 4 news this morning, these were the items in order with the time allocated to each. 1. (1:20) Online safety 2. (1:02) Airport arrivals eGates failure 3. (1:15) US arms delivery to Israel suspended 4. (1:02) A year of smashed ocean temperature records 5. (0:12) John Swinney leading SNP 6. (0:44) Hazards around abandoned mines 7. (1:05) German far right 8. (0:50) Garrick Club admitting women 9. (0:51) Ordnance Survey using local names 10. (0:12) Ireland qualifying for Eurovision In itself, it's a trivial matter, I realise that, but it really struck me how items 2. and 4. received the same amount of time and where they were in respect to each other in the running order. The passport eGates item was delivered with emphasis on passengers being delayed by 'over two hours' and that there was 'chaos' and one person had to spend 'longer in the terminal than he had in the air'. The Sea Surface Temperature item mentioned broken temperature records 'every single day during the last year because of Climate Change' and by more than 'one third of a degree' on 47 of those days, which is a 'huge margin'. Also it mentioned the 'worldwide coral bleaching' event which is ongoing right now. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68972065 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-68921215 Yes, governments and businesses have to drive through change if we are to have any chance of something like we are used to as a way of life surviving the next few decades, but WE have to drive the agenda as well, and we are still, in effect, just ignoring things and hoping they go away, are we not? Just look at that chart on the second link and have a really good think about what it represents. |
| Forum Thread | What is this thing called love? at 19:26 4 May 2024
Having maintained, for the last twenty years, a somewhat snooty and snobbish attitude and complete disengagement with the FA Barclaycard Premiership or whatever the thing is called, I found myself just now listening avidly, whilst doing the washing up, to a match between Wolverhampton Wanderers (I wasn't sure they still existed) and apparent table-toppers Manchester City - yes City! Whilst the atmosphere seemed a bit flat and they kept stopping the game to refer to some bloke called Mr Veeyayarr (or something), it did still sound like football. Town will surely do well in there next season because apparently old Al 'Finger' Haaland is still playing for the leaders! I did actually, for the first time since the end of the game today, shed a little tear or two into my Fairy Liquid suds. Well, we've got no choice - we have to engage with that monster next year because.......................................... "WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE, SAY WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE! COME - ON - YOU - BLUE - BOYS" [Post edited 4 May 19:27]

| Forum Thread | Disturbing the way that we laugh off threats to democracy if they're 'exciting'. at 09:50 29 Apr 2024
There was a brief discussion at the end of Today (R4) about generative AI and the potential impact of fakes (audio, stills, video) on upcoming elections. Whilst it's good that the discussion was had, there seemed to be a light-hearted acceptance between the presenter, the Demos lady and the Wikipedia bloke that political parties are going to indulge in AI shenanigans. The Demos lady said that if a party is making a satirical (and realistic) fake, "just label it, just be open and transparent and truthful about it". That attitude seems to me to be a green light to political interests to 'accidentally' forget to label it or make the label removable etc. Surely with something so important, with a technology so capable and with an electorate so vulnerable to deceit, there should be an absolute hard ban on any member of a political party making, endorsing or even pissing about with anything fake for 'satirical' purposes or any other. The threat to democracy is too great. |

General Election now! btw. this was a direct quote from the dot Chrs Phlp on Kuenssburg earlier - he thinks it's just a question of people being a bit 'grumpy with the government'. [Post edited 28 Apr 16:42]

My new favourite opposition manager. What a fantastic open, honest interview. I so hope they can sneak into the play-offs and if not this season make it next season. The players interviews as well last night - they look like a happy and positive bunch, manager and players and style remind me a lot of us. Up the Tigers! |

Hunched on his seat for 90 minutes, unable to get a tune out of £100m + worth of players. Gutless and useless. I wonder what the whinging will be about. What will Saints do to 'em? He-he-he. |

Say Ooh Aah Q P R, Say Ooh Aah Q P R! Say Ooh Aah Q P R, Say Ooh Aah Q P R! I've been chanting this in my so-called brain for the last hour or so, and I think it's going to make things happen for us at the Loft tonight. |

Is it the case that both Ipswich and N*rwich want the other to win this weekend? Not sure if that makes me feel dirty or just amused and relieved that we are where we are now. |

...back towards a decent and fairish place to live. Brazen shoplifting gangs item on R4 just now. Clogged up justice system. Experienced coppers disillusioned and gone. Health services packing up. Corporate disdain for environmental and human rights responsibilities. Infrastructure absolutely f**ked. ...it goes on and on and on doesn't it. Many of us are very well off with big investment portfolios, second homes, three cars, big pensions. We have taken too much and we have to start giving back if we don't want this to spiral down to an utterly dystopian sh!t-hole. Don't instinctively rebel against higher taxation without thinking why it is required. Please think about society and environment before adding to your personal pile of 'wealth' if you value the thought of a decent future for you and yours and everybody else's. |
