While there have been some great games and big shocks in this competition, it's mainly been due to the poverty in quality across the board which has led to the success of workmanlike defence-based teams such as Sweden and the drug-fuelled Russians (on adrenalin of course, no-one wants to get poisoned!). I can't remember so many top sides (Germany, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and others still in it) playing so poorly. For such teams as Sweden, Russia, Croatia, Switzerland, even Japan and Colombia, to be in the last 16 in the world is testimony to the lack of quality here.
