The Fall 09:31 - Jul 29 with 2072 viewsArgyle_blue

I somehow missed The Fall growing up - it was easy to develop musical blindspots before the internet and streaming. Can anyone suggest an album to start on please - there's a lot to choose from?!

Hex Induction Hour is my fav, but also The Fall were WELL before my time and I can’t say I’ve listened to ALL of Mark E. Smith’s huge catalogue of work.

There’s a very good documentary on him I forgot the name of worth watching.

Also, check out Zounds if you like The Fall.

I'd also say Hex Enduction Hour as a starting point, but my favourite is Slates.

Probably my favourite band but a LOT of dross to wade through, especially in the later years.

Actually, if you get the 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong compilation that'd be a good place to get an overview of the best choons.

Great band! As Footers said, the 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong album is one of the best for getting to know the band. I hope you enjoy them and then add to your collection. They did a lot of albums. Mark E Smith is very much missed.

I'd suggest giving this a look.

Start your listening with 'Live at the Witch Trials' and the 'Complete Peel Sessions'.

Those first two Peel sessions are things of absolute beauty! Right, now for a whole day of rocking out to the Fall!

I may join you.

That early stuff will always be my favourite stuff. That garagey, rawness is just beautiful.

Roll a spliff and pour a pint, The Fall were made to enjoy a bit wasted.

Plus work is more tolerable.

The Fall are the greatest band ever, so you’ve made a good choice.

There’s not really a representative album to start with, and there are lots of different periods.

So, some suggestions:

The Slates EP or Hex Enduction Hour for their mighty early-80s era. The band are an inventive maelstrom in this period.

This Nation's Saving Grace for peak Brix-era power popiness (although that's relative).

Extricate for post-Brix coolness.

The Marshall Suite for very-alcoholic-era Smith (this is a long era, incidentally), but somehow sounding great.

The Real New Fall LP is just very good, earlyish Elena era.

Your Future Our Clutter is Smith very ill but turning it to gold stuff. Every track is fantastic.

The last album — New Facts Emerge — is both funny and sad, especially the last track.

If I was going to suggest one, it'd be Slates, I think.

They put out a singles compilation 458489 which is a good start.

That Brix-era is the most user friendly. I would say the rest is an acquired taste

Some well good tunes and links on this post already - there's so much stuff Mark E. Smith did, but this is possibly my favourite....

And this is a banger too.

So much good music from Manchester.

Might not be to everyone's tastes but I quite like the Von Sudenfed album he did too.

On another tip, people in this thread may also like Datblygu, who are another favourite of mine and are basically a Welsh language version of the Fall.
