Ukraine is applying pressure in the south now.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/03/russia-ukraine-live-updates.html

I noticed on BBC that Russia is sending its recruits and reservists to the occupied territories for ‘intensive training’. Why send them there? I suspect intensive training amounts to ‘here’s your weapon, the enemy is that way’ and they’ll be thrown in before long if Ukrainian pressure continues. It’s not going to end well.

"Nuclear weapons convoy sparks fears Putin could be preparing test to send ‘signal to the West’

Train operated by secretive nuclear division spotted in central Russia heading towards the front line in Ukraine"

"It comes as sources told The Times that Nato had sent an intelligence report to its members and allies alerting them to the fact that Russia is expected to test its nuclear-capable torpedo drone Poseidon, possibly in the Black Sea, which it controls.

The Poseidon torpedo, dubbed the “weapon of the apocalypse”, can be launched from the submarine. According to La Repubblica newspaper, it is about to be tested in the area of the Kara Sea, north of the Russian mainland."

Just been reading that Swedish authorities are saying the Nord stream leak has not let up, leaving them to believe Russia is still pumping gas into it. Looks like ecoterrorism can be added to the long list of criminal charges.

I was looking for the first map in this article yesterday but couldn't find it so maybe it was held back for a while for fact checking but it is back today:

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/2/28/russia-ukraine-crisis-in-maps-and-chart

The report of a large area of land between Mariupol and Crimea being contested by Ukrainian partisans is another blow to claims that Russia has successfully occupied its four illegally grabbed territories.

Poll: How will we get fourteen points from the last five games ?

I think the partisan element is something that’s not been reported on, like much in Russian stolen territory. While partisans have little effect overall militarily, it will tie up russian forces needed elsewhere. It’s bad news for the Russians.

These people resisting the Russians behind the lines are phenomenally brave, given they face certain death if captured. I hope they are getting any support that can be given.

Rumblings of significant movement in the South. Various sources (unconfirmed, but both Ukrainian and Russian) seem to be suggesting Russians are retreating from more front line settlements including Davydiv Brid which has been a site of heavy fighting for weeks. Ukraine's push down to Dudchany on the banks of the Dnipro risks leaving Russian units completely cut off on the eastern flank of the Kherson front so they might be falling back to new positions.

The Ukranians are also posting false territory gains to confuse and terrify the Russians. Appears to work too.

That’s what I’m hearing too.

There are also pictures emerging from liberated Lyman and the Russian retreat looks anything but orderly. Kit and bodies strewn all over the place.

Putin is going to be forced to rush the cannon fodder into the line sooner rather than later, unless he goes nuclear of course.

Which all makes me wonder what Elon Musk is up to:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63126550

Much as some posters are dismissive of Erdogan he is at least a national leader and has some material resources with which to broker peace (which would best have been done two weeks ago as a hiatus to prevent loss of life), either Musk is convinced that in the virtual world real war can be changed in the cloud or he is just after clicks, which would be sick.

Odious unpleasant little dictator though he is, Erdogan is probably best placed for any sort of negotiations.

Elon Musk is just a salesman, albeit a very good one.

The road out of Lyman was appalling. Considering they has to retreat for several miles down that road while Ukrainian artillery had free rein over the whole thing, it would have been hugely costly for the Russian forces.

I still believe Putin is using Nuclear weapons as a bargaining chip, but I don't see how he will be able to use them. If he uses them on the front lines, he's also going to kill countless "Russian" civilians from his nearly "liberated" and annexed territories. If he uses them away from the front lines, he'll cross a line so big, India and possibly even China wouldn't be able to stomach.

It has been like that for a while, which is why I thought they may try and liberate Melitopol, after they took so much land around Kharkiv (coupled with the reports that the Ukrainians are sitting on one more army (3 in total)).

Reports suggest Ukraine have already taken part of the R66 highway (links Kriminna to Svatove). Svatove being the next place of huge significance to the Russian war effort. At this point, it would be surprising if Kriminna lasted a week in Russian hands. Svatove will likely be longer but some reports suggesting Ukrainians heading there already. If true, Svatove in Ukrainian hands within 2 weeks? Not unrealistic if the Ukrainian logistics have caught up with their advances (apparently this is why they paused around the Oskil before continuing to Lyman.

It’s all about logistics really. It’s something the Americans and British were fully aware of in WW2 and implemented and neither the Germans or Russians did. They tried to overcome that with bodies. Lives were expendable and expended - wastefully.

The Ukrainians cannot afford to waste men, especially not the trained and battle hardened ones they have, so I’m not surprised about the pauses. I think taking large built up area is always costly so if they can continue to hollow out the Russians the way they are doing, they’ll have little option to keep pulling back to a defendable position for the winter.

I can’t imagine how hard that’s going to be for the reservists, elderly gentlemen, convicts, conscripts and sweepings in the Russian army. It’s tough enough for trained people.

I'm not sure what that second Comms route is (the river maybe, but that doesn't go to Kriminna. Maybe a train track that I can't see). But the Ukrainians could choose to take that before turning to Svatove. Kriminna looking very vulnerable already.

Then after weeks of Russian resistance around Kherson, they have crumbled on the Northeast of the southern front. Huge gains as a result of retreats to avoid encirclement.

You can't help but be positive, knowing that Russia will find it more difficult to defend occupied territories in the winter

Aww Poor thing. I hope he/she recovers ok. So cruel. But then Russians cruelty to others, animals, each other seems to know no limits.

Ukraine has to get its country/land back, including Crimea.

"...rocket capable of devastating half a square mile of land in a single salvo, as they prepare to take on Russian defensive positions in Kherson...."
It won't be land that gets devastated by ball bearings. Disgusting really!

Yes indeed - cleverly (fiendishly) designed to hit flesh without killing the land. Other than fallout, whats the difference between this and a low yield nuke? I hope its to be used in retaliation only, or it may up the ante.
