It has certainly raised the war above the radar, and may well have the effect of encouraging Congress to reach some sort of deal on military aid to Ukraine.

I think that was a Putin hissy fit after Ukraine sunk his ship full of drone parts.

Will there come a point at which Putin realises this is just a complete waste of money for no actual gain? Can he quietly cease the conflict without losing face?

You would think only by annexing Lukanskh, Donbas, and Crimea which he could ‘sell’ back home as liberating the ethnic Russians from the ’far right’ Ukrainians. Sounds bonkers when you read it back but that’s the narrative he’s pushed so far.

The US could end this war tomorrow. Sadly, they've been attempting to prolong it, ever since Ukraine and Russia threatened a peace deal last year.

As a matter of interest would you prefer they ended it by withdrawing all support and allowing Russia to march their way in or would you prefer them to supply air cover for a no-fly zone? Just curious which extreme you are pushing there.

Odd question. Russia have wanted a deal for a long time that gave Ukraine neutrality, and the longer the US continues to prolong the war, the worse it will for Ukraine.

How’s that Putin Koolaid taste?

The US is not prolonging the war, only Ukraine can decide whether they want to continue. The US and allies are offering military aid, they have no say in whether the Ukrainian army continues to fight. I’m not surprised you’ve not brought forward any evidence for Russia offering peace at terms which are acceptable to the Ukrainian people. Russia are the ones who could end the war tomorrow, you seem confused.

Edit - to add neutrality is not a viable deal for Ukraine, Russia would rebuild its forces for another invasion without Wrstern backing. NATO is a strawman, Putin is an imperialist who’s attacked non-NATO aligned Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Ukraine (and all bit annexed Belarus). I think your knowledge of geopolitics seems to be somewhat lacking.

You appear to have maintained your bizarre position, whilst mysteriously completely avoiding the challenges made.

How are the US prolonging the war? Be specific.

When you say a deal that gives Ukraine neutrality, what do you think you mean by that as it clearly isn't a democratically elected government run by Zelinsky? Is it a puppet government along the lines of Belarus? Why should Ukraine be forced to become a Russian puppet-state?

If Russia genuinely wants a neutral Ukraine, why have they invaded it?

I'm afraid Ukraine have next to no say in this war. This war is being dictated by the US and Russia. The US could end it tomorrow by withdrawing support, the same way that Israel would be wiped out without US support.

So no proof then?

Of course Ukraine do. Their soldiers could down tools tomorrow if they’ve had enough.

You are also incorrect on Israel - they aren’t even in the top 10 arms purchasers from the US. Much of their high tech weaponry is Israeli made with a few imported components and chips. They also source weapons from Russia and other markets. Not to mention the fact they are nuclear armed. Geopolitics is a major part of my paid work, it’s clear you don’t have any idea what you are talking about.

By your own logic, Ukraine could simply surrender too.

Russia could simply withdraw as well.

So the question gave two scenarios:

1) Withdrawing support 'and let Russia march all the way in'
2) Supply cover for a 'no-fly zone'.

The most likely scenario for this war, which has been at a stalemate ever since the failed march on Kiev in 2022, is for a peace deal. It is now almost beyond doubt from multiple sources that Ukraine and Russia had the making of a peace deal in place in 2022. This was scuppered by the West, in particular Boris Johnson declaring 'let's just fight'. But it is the only way that will war will end. The sooner the better, of course, but it's interesting how many people detest this peace scenario. They want more war.

They wouldnt end it that way, but they would almost certainly create a long term situation where complete invasion succeeds and the people of Ukraine are occupied. You think thats a good solution?

But Russia did not succeed. Their invasion of Kiev completely failed, they have lost many more lives than they expected, they have exposed their army to be much weaker than thought and have run up extremely large deficits. A peace solution does not include the occupation of Ukraine, but independence from both the US and Russia.

Russia are not interested in withdrawing,. They could end the war tomorrow by doing so. They would of course be interested in freezing the current situation- thats a win for them, which allows them to restock and retrain ready to push again.

Now what are these sources and what was the oven ready deal.....

Thank you for the opinion from the US, who have wanted Ukraine under their control ever since they started funding it, in 1991.

Putin may want Ukraine, and Ukraine may want Russia off its territory, but it is not clear to me that either goal is achievable. That being the case, and to avoid more unnecessary killing and suffering, the rational solution would be peace based on the current borders, which admittedly involves an increase in the area controlled by Russia but is far better than looked like might be the case in the first few months of the conflict.

It doesn't strike me that this is going to happen, but all I can see is a repeat of the futility of the Iran-Iraq war which stretched on for 8 years, with no real victory and 1-2 million casualties.
