So with no Trusty, understandably, and no seemingly no McNally, annoyingly, who would people like to see us (REASONABLY) target to sign at centre back?

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

Not sure that logic stacks up. The reason we've targeted the likes of Trusty/McNally is because we want a starter rather than a back up option, i.e we think Burgess is possibly not at the required level for where we want to be.

Fare point... I just don't think what we've got already is as bad as some are making out.
As much as I'd like an upgrade in as many positions as possible. Being realistic, the likes of Mads Anderson going straight to the Prem from L1, Trusty choosing Prem football... I just wonder whether those CBs within our budget and that we are " able" to attract, are any better than what we have here already.

Tbf, I'm not overly stressed about us defensively... The fact that we're allegedly targeting the likes of Trusty, in order to " improve" on what we've already got. Says a lot about how strong we are already.
The fact that we haven't just gone out and added any old CB, says a lot about how strong we are, already.
Best defence in L1 last season. Most clean sheets and club record clean sheets.. Sure, standard will be higher this season, but it's not The Champions League.
Someone like Cathcart, imo, smacks of another Keogh signing. Might add a lot in terms of experience, but Im not so sure he'd add much to our defence in terms of our playing style.
I'd much rather we tried to bring Baggot into the fray, and accelerated his development. Than sign someone who doesn't upgrade the standard we have already.
Why is Cathcart still floating about as a free agent?

Just a note as to why the like of Tuanzebe and Cathcart may be still floating around as a free agent.

The PFA provide a severance pay for the month of July on release of a players previous contract (subject to not turning down a new deal) - however if a player signs for a new club in July they do not receive that payment.

So for example Tuanzebe on £50k a Man Utd - he isn't going to receive this on his next deal so will take another £50k from the PFA in July and sign for a new club in August - likely to be same case with Cathcart - may well see more movement now we are in August.

A friend has just been through the same process.

Much of our defensive quality last season was down to our control of the game and the ball. We pretty much dominated territory against every team, such that our defence rarely faced an onslaught.

We'll certainly face more spells this season with our backs against the wall where we really need to weather a storm and come out the other side unscathed. This is will be a big test for the back 4.

We controlled the game and the ball in a lot of games, but certainly not all of them.

During our best run we conceded the majority of possession in 5 straight away games - MK Dons (51%), Bolton (56%), Derby (56%), Peterborough(55%), Barnsley (54%) - and didn't concede a single goal in that whole run.

We had defending to do during that run and when we did it well when called upon.

If not Tuanzebe, who would likely sign?
