Luongo was immense yesterday, and I don't buy the criticism of him in recent games. |
Anyone who has watched all our games will have noticed that certain set ups from the opposition neutralise certain of our strengths. Massimo is one of those targeted, sometimes.
The way that it is done is by putting three athletic, tall strong defensive midfielders up against Sam and Mass.
When that happens, Mass gets crowded out and doesn't have his best game.
But it does mean we have an overload somewhere else on the pitch. McKenna adjusts for this and we scored late goals.
So, sometimes, one of our players is a victim of the opposition set up, but it usually results in Kieran being able to take advantage elsewhere.
Central Midfield is the obvious place to try and take an advantage, and McKenna's system makes it relatively straightforward for the opposition to claim a numerical advantage there, so Mass is often the player who can be seen to have the least impactful match.
When the set up of the opposition gives Mass and Morsy a fair match up, they kill it more often than not. |  | | |

To add to that, we’ve had quite a few cracks at goal from around the halfway line, Chappers and Broady in particular.
Makes the keeper sit deeper, which either creates a gap behind their back line or brings their back line deeper to expose their midfield.

This tends to happen only in away games, but when it does it often affects more than Luongo, and it is unrealistic in any event to think we will dominate throughout every away game.
But as you suggest when we struggle early on, we normally find a way to adjust in the second half and turn it round.
And Luongo is integral to our team and the way we play, as evidenced by the fact that McKenna always starts him, even though recently he was perhaps not fully fit.
As it is, in my view the only games we have been bested this season were Leeds and West Brom away. [Post edited 18 Mar 8:19]

WBA and Leeds used this tactic to perfection, and had the squad depth to maintain the intensity.
Ampadu was the best CDM Morsy has come up against, in the League this season, in my opinion. He was utilised almost like a defensive Number 10, often the second man to a press on our midfielders or our central 10, and the one who came away with the ball If Leeds don't go up and we do, I think he would be a very good signing to fit our system. | | | |

That's a really good observation. i'd noticed the number of long, long range shots we've had this season and put it down as just one of those things. But your comment makes perfect sense. |  |
