As much as I don’t like billionaires, it’s a terrible painting and I’d want it taken down too.

I think it's unnecessarily cruel. However, it's art and it's got people talking.

Is it any more cruel than any of these?

I'm kind of surprised people are at all bothered that someone in the public eye has some painting done of them in a style that isn't considered flattering.

I find her trying to use her power to get it taken down way worse than the perceived slight. It is text book censorship.

artists can produce what they want and getting into an argument with them about it is pointless. i am torn between assuming there is incredible artistic insight, cleverness and truth in this work which i am too thick to see, and wondering whether painting is really his strength.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I disagree, native Australian art often gets to a deep point concerning how someone feels inside whilst also offering a true representation (see 'The Songlines' by Bruce Chatwin) that has empathy even as it shows flaws. Sometimes we all need to look honestly at ourselves.

Quite right. That painting on the right doesn’t do her any favours at all.

Isn’t this a storm in a the cup? It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, but then they’d struggle to make me look worse.

It should be detached from England, cast adrift and used as a penal colony.

To some extent it is already the latter.

I'm also enjoying them but am I missing something here. Is there something clever going on...or is this artist just really bad but because they come out funny he's now 'acclaimed'. You get paintings like this in every school art class. Brilliantly funny but actually being credited as good art?! Is it really deliberate. Genuine question. Like has this dude painted good paintings as well?

Matter of taste, but, this article is about the one he got a major prize for: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-05-24/ramsay-art-prize-winner-announced-in-adel

Think all his portraiture is in this abstracted style and intended as caricature-adjacent.

Is it any crueller than the Spitting Image puppet of, say, Paul Daniels or Samantha Fox?

Who had done nothing to warrant such "cruelty" other than:

a) redefine magic brilliantly for the televisual age

And

b) pose topless

Whereas Gina Rhinehart has been outspoken in opposition to the promotion of a culture of respect towards Aboriginal Australians, and has built her vast fortune in part by exploiting mineral rights on areas contested by Aboriginal peoples. In response to which an Aboriginal artist has painted her as he sees her.

It's punching up, and fair game, in my opinion. By speaking out against moves to promote respect towards Aboriginal people she totally opens herself up to disrespect from Aboriginal people.

She went first. She revealed her True Colours. Vincent Namatjira has embraced those True Colours as his palette for her portrait.

Having given this very po-faced answer, I also want to add:

If Vincent Namatjira has won Australia's top art award twice, how come this genius is still waiting to hear back from the Turner Prize committee?

Whilst those pieces of art are fascinating, they are not in the same league as "footballers with tits".
