Maidstone and Coventry 09:03 - May 22 with 626 viewsoldburian

These two clubs paid a major part in getting automatic promotion. Although at the time the defeat to Maidstone seemed disastrous it meant at least one less game to play at a time when the pressure on the key players was mounting. Of course Maidstone then went onto Coventry who in turn had a fixture pile up giving us a whole fortnight to recharge and get the injured back. Without that we would have played them without Burns and Hirst, we came there refreshed and meeting a team just cruelly denied a Cup Final place. Also a mention to QPR and their demolition of Leeds.

That Maidstone result may well have been a blessing n the end. Also remarkable how quickly the embarrassement dissipated, a win or tow and it was all good again. Those Miadstone folk must be delighted that we got promoted, enhances their achievement even further.

I’d say the Maidstone result was embarrassing rather than disastrous but appreciate your overall point. If we’d won that then beat Coventry then it could have been us in the FA Cup semis. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t have gained automatic promotion then.
