Our poor penalty record 08:08 - Oct 18 with 712 views | thorpedo | We all seem to have the perception what we have been rubbish at penalties for years now, so I did a (small) bit of research. And we are. Last 5 full season plus this one so far, League penalties only;- Ipswich Scored 14, missed 9 - 60% scored Norwich Scored 15, missed 4 - 94% Burnley Scored 14, missed 1 - 94% Leeds Scored 23, missed 4 - 85% 80% is the 'gold' standard for penalty conversions, so we are well short of that. Our poor penalty record on 08:12 - Oct 18 with 677 views | bsw72 | Penalties aren’t just scored and missed, they are scored, missed or saved. Last night wasn’t a bad penalty but the keeper made a good save. We often score with bad penalties as the keeper goes the other way etc

It wasn't Al Hamedi bad, but it wasn't wide enough and hand height. He's missed two in a row, time to try someone else. Hirst's record is 70%: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/george-hirst/elfmetertore/spieler/420808 Scored 13, missed 4. [Post edited 18 Oct 8:21]

It was a bad penalty hit right into an area that a keeper will save if he goes the right way, that combined with the obvious direction it was going from run up played right into the keepers hands.

Sorry but last nights was a terrible penalty he litereally, literally looked left, shaped left and shot left, the only thing he didn;t do was point left.

It was a bad penalty. Watching it in real time at the game it looked like it lacked any power.

Nah, he may as well have told the keeper where he was hitting it, it was that obvious.

It's called a double-bluff. Didn't pay off, but Hirst's mistake was in the execution: too central and hand height.
Our poor penalty record on 08:45 - Oct 18 with 500 views | Cafe_Newman | Our penalty taker needs to be a regular starter, who plays the full 90 who can strike a dead ball hard and accurately. We should be looking no further than our draught excluder. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He's a poor penalty taker imo. Very lucky the one against Birmingham went in. Was never confident last night, there's never enough conviction in his ball striking. Someone like Delap is the perfect penalty taker for me, pick a side, strike with conviction, if the keeper saves it it would need to be an unbelievable save.
Our poor penalty record on 09:07 - Oct 18 with 435 views | HighgateBlue | From memory, Jack Clarke has an excellent penalty record this season, and Hirst has a poor one. I think we need to be specific and not generalise. A top six team needs a top six number 9, and I do not think Hirst is that, I'm sorry to say. I believe that Hirst is 1 from 3 on penalties this season, including the Bromley match. If I'm wrong on that, doubtless someone will correct me. If he scores that pen last night, we probably go in at HT 1-0 up and the whole complexion of the match changes. I wonder if Hirst will remain our regular starter at number 9 this season. Mr Azon or Dr January might come calling. It's not just me - the player ratings on this site seem to have him lower than everyone else this season bar Taylor and McAteer.

It was at an ideal height for a keeper to save if he went the right way. Hard and low or high and no keeper gets them in the corner. You're right, some bad penalties do go in but that was not a good penalty last night. The stuttering run is cr@p in my opinion. Hirst beating his chest at Brum on the opening day shouting "That's what I do!" looked lame then and worse now as he should be the league's top scorer with the amount of golden chances he has squandered so far.

Our poor penalty record on 13:24 - Oct 18 with 246 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | For a detail oriented coach, McKenna has had a poor record with it really! Lost every shootout as well I think? Even Chappers was fairly bad at them. I can remember so many misses whoever stepped up. Broadhead tucked away his most important against Port Vale but then missed against Barnsley. Ali the less said the better. Hirst conversion rate had been ok but I was never confident and he’d missed his last one before last night as well. It was a shame Jack Clarke, Ben Johnson or Ashley Young were not on the pitch. I said after Bromley Hirst shouldn’t be on them moving forwards but looks like he was still behind Clarke as the taker, not sure why. [Post edited 18 Oct 13:26]

Yes and ours are missed and saved at a far more common clip than other teams!
