Former Blue John McGreal is on trial at Colchester United. The 35-year-old was released by Burnley at the end of last season and is available on a free transfer.

McGreal will play in a friendly at Gillingham tonight and is viewed as a possible successor to another former Town man Wayne Brown, who joined Hull earlier in the summer.

Town were linked with McGreal early in the close season but boss Jim Magilton said he was no longer interested in signing his former team-mate.

Meanwhile, reported Town loan target Neil Kilkenny has joined Oldham Athletic from Birmingham on a short-term spell which will end in January.
