Burley Tried to Sign Marshall
Burley Tried to Sign Marshall
Saturday, 24th Mar 2001 09:58

Reports this morning claim that Town manager George Burley made an attempt to sign Norwich City's Lee Marshall prior to his transfer to Leicester this week.

The Town boss apparently made enquiries about the player who would have been out of contract with the Canaries in the summer. With this in mind he should have been available at a far cheaper price than the £600,000 Peter Taylor paid for him. George Burley is certainly not a mananger who will pay over the odds for a player and hence there was no deal.

Once again Kevin Beattie has been voted the greatest Town player of all-time in a poll of fans. The latest, in the East Anglian, puts The Beat ahead of John Wark, the only other player that ever gets a vote as the top man of all-time.

As usual the '81 side is well represented in the top ten with Muhren, Mills, Thijssen, Mariner, Butcher and Burley all in the top ten with only Ray Crawford and Allan Hunter top ten entries from outside that team.

Of the modern era Matt Holland finishes highest (11th), while Richard Wright, Kieron Dyer, Marcus Stewart and Mauricio Taricco appear in the top 25.

Elsewhere we suspect some mischief on the part of some fans with David Gregory 93rd, Les Tibbott 100th and most sensationally of all Glenn Pennyfather 79th!
